Ciao all,
I have ready 22 Gneisenau ''tarnanstrich'' schemes to be showed, anybody interested ?
Ciao Antonio :MG:
Yes,Antonio.
We are very interested. It would be nice if you show us your paint shemes.
Regards
ZitatAnybody interested?
... of course, I am always interested! :-D
Hello Antonio,
I'm very interested too. Please let us see your new schemes, I'm sure they will be brilliant! :TU:)
Greetings Stefan
Ciao all,
OK, thanking Thorsten ( T-Geronimo ) and Harold for their kind help and suggestions that will enable me to post them let me do some work to personalize them as far as size and removal of the swastikas ( air recognition ) and you will see the full Gneisenau life evolution in colours.
Ok,..I go for the work and I will be soon back here,..... :MG:
Ciao Antonio :-)
Ciao all,
ok first of all I need to provide you a legenda to read thru the yearly evolution of Gneisenau.
The Gneisenau had 8 major refit works done on her, so starting from the base drawing, it will be 8 more so a total of 9 base drawings for ship technical modifications.
Each base drawing scheme as been consequently indentified with a number fron 1 to 9, so GU1, GU2, etc etc till GU 9 which is the last one.
On top of those 9 base drawings there have been various camouflages applyed, that I have identified with alphabetical letters, from A to V proggresively.
Those ship evolution plans basically explain the whole ship modification and hopefully provide you a clear way to read the attached schemes.
Please keep in mind that this is a never ending research work, as by putting out my work I hope to stimulate more discussion, have persons with addittional informations contacting me, maybe survivors looking at them and gave som einputs and so on.... so our future knowledge will hopefully grow more.
This is my final goal, learning more and preventing the memoy of those beautiful ships to disappear, while helping everybody to learn and know them.
Enjoy the ship :MG:
Ciao Antonio :-)
The 1939 and 1940 evolutions.
The 1941 and 1942 evolution.
Here the first 4 drawings:
...and here the second set of 4 drawings :
Now we enter the various operations codename with top turret paintings, Nordmark and Weserubung, YELLOW and RED :
Last part of the Norwegian campaign, with Juno and the torpedo taken, than the return to Germany with that dazzle camouflage she had also on the dry dock back home.
After the repair on dry dock, the Baltic scheme, finally a correct sheme as all the ones out there were wrong unfortunately.
Than the ship was repainted base grey and sailed for Operation Berlin first attempt on December 1940, but under the base frey on the photos you can still see the dark grey on the stern and on the bow of previous Baltic camouflage scheme, especially on the photos of her in Bergen on December 1940.
Finally the Operation Berlin started, but they changed colour with YELLOW.
Before sailing they added the frame betwenn the hangar and the funnel, and placed a 20 mm Vierling C38 on it.
When the ship was out of the Luftwaffe range, they covered the air recognition with light grey paint.
Finally out of Brest dry dock, at first was the old light grey painture, than a much darker colour before sailing for Operation Cerberus.
Thanks Antonio,
Harold
Ciao Harold,
DANKE SCHON mein freund :MG:
Ci sentiamo presto...... Ciao Antonio :-)
I didnt expect anything other than this outstanding work when i red your name as thread starter
You did a FANTASTIC job on this paint schemas!
Am i allowed to add these great pictures to my personal collection of DKM WWII unit - drawings?
with due respect
Sebastian
Ciao Sebastian and all,
Thanks for the nice compliments,..... :-)
YES, of course you can take them and use it for your personal studies, that is why I made them public, so people can enjoy them, study, learn and hopefully help me on making them better ad better, .. in any way that can be done, .. especially on this ship were I suppose many survivors are still alive and I hope that you German guys will have a chance to show them those drawings and obtain some more inputs.
For example I know that once she was under rework in Gdynia ( Gothenhafen ) Gneisenau hull was painted with another dazzle camouflage ( Brown, Red, Green and Yellow ), but I have never seen close photos or obtained better infos on it.
Thanks again and Ciao Antonio :-)
Many thanks for sharing this great information, ANTONIO!
Ciao Peter,
my pleasure to share and help persons with my same passion for those beautiful ships.
Hope to be able soon to add more ships, ..... so everybody can see better how beautiful they were.
Ciao Antonio :-)
Ciao All,
here a Gneisenau never seen photo with the ' dazzle ' camouflage for you to enjoy and have a confirmation on how correct my drawing was with that dazzle camo.

It is NOT the Admiral Hipper, it is the Gneisenau in Trondheim ,.... with the dazzle camouflage on, just repaired by the Huascaran on her bow,.. after being torpedoed.
The Gneisenau is ready to sail back to Germany.
Ciao Antonio :MG:
Gruss to everybody,
some news about Gneisenau latest modifications while in Brest, soon before she sailed for Op. Cerberus :

Ciao Antonio :MG:
Ciao all,
this time I am ready to publish the updated version of my Scharnhost drawings made years ago with Andrea Toller.
Ciao all,
here the other ones, and I am sure many will be surprised by the never published before ' Baltic ' camouflage scheme.
Ciao all,
and here the last 2 '' Norwegen tarnanstrich '' the dark one from January till July 1943, and the last one from July till December 1943.
Now we have more photos of the last Scharnhorst camouflage, so I was able to make it a little more precisely.
Ciao Antonio :MG:
Edit:
07.07.2012 baltic camo added.
Hello Antonio.
Thanks for this Pictures, there are a great Help for my new 1:100 Scharnhorst Modell , i Build it with the Camouflage of the Ostfront Operation.
But i have only 5 Pics from this Time :|.
Thanks,
Peter
Hello Peter and all,
I know the feeling of having only few informations, .. when I started working on this camouflage scheme back on 2003 I only had 3 photos and almost nobody beleiving it was Scharnhorst last camouflage scheme.
Time is passed and now we know much more,... I saw the wreck photos details with this camo on, .. and a lot more photos came out of private collections,.. .. now it is very clear when they painted it and how long it was used on Scharnhorst.
Send me a private mal and I am sure I can help you out with some more infos on this camouflage.
I am a modeler too, so I love to help modelers ...... :O/Y
Ciao Antonio :MG:
Hi Antonio,
thank you for sharing with us :TU:) !
Ciao Thomas and all,
my pleasure as you know,... did you see the Baltic scheme ?
...a lot different of what initialy thought it was,... very unusual one, .... a big surprise to me ....
...now some more news on Bismarck and Prinz Eugen and Op. Rheinubung Fliegersichtzeichen, ..... GELB - YELLOW !
Ciao Antonio :MG:

Hello everybody,
referencing those well known to me photos :
http://forum-marinearchiv.de/smf/index.php/topic,1392.0.html
Now I can release to everybody ( free of charge as usual ) the knowledge about Scharnhorst Baltic scheme ... :MZ:
Bye / Gruss Antonio :MG:
Bravo mi caro! In bocca di lupo!
:MG:
Hello everybody,
@ Harold,
my friend, when somebody does not have any idea about what he is doing the results are the one we saw today and in the past too.
Those " knowledgeable guys " have " mirrored " a port side photo and draw a port side camouflage into a starboard side camouflage scheme and written that it was identical and symmetric on both sides.
They even wrote that their evidences demonstrate that ???
Congratulations .... we would like to see those evidences now ... :MLL:
They even copied my very old 2003 drawing with the dark bow, .... without knowing were I took it from ... and what it was done for .... ???? :MV:
As you can see I have several reasons to laugh ..... :MLL:
Bye / Gruss Antonio :MG:
I have added your drawing here:
--/>/> http://forum-marinearchiv.de/smf/index.php/topic,3967.msg83375.html#msg83375
So all SH-drawings are in a line. ;)
Hello everybody,
@ Thorsten,
many thanks my friend, ... but I think that the Marinearchiv forum members now deserve and want to see how the Scharnhorst Baltic camouflage was really made at least according to my recent findings, ... as the " copycats " have already showed their evident limitations on those type of researches, ...
Soon I will attach the last and most updated version of the Scharnhorst Baltic camouflage, ... now I can ... :MLL:
Bye / Gruss Antonio :MG:
Great!
Now everybody knows how the starboard side really looked like :-)
Looking forward to see the new dawings.
But i'm not sure about the red turret tops. Suggesting marking them "possibly/maybe red regarding document....".
Sebastian
Hello everybody,
@ Sebastian,
you are right about the Fliegersichtzeichen colour exact determination, ... I agree with you .... :MZ:
.... it reminds me the Bismarck yellow tops discussion we had for few years,... and some " intelligent knowledgeable persons " that declared they were ready to " heat their hat " if ever was going to be demonstrated that Bismarck had yellow tops, ....
... now I have some " Big Sombrero's " ready since some time for them to be eaten, ... but I have the impression that they now will try to sell to the world that they have discovered it .... and will publish soon the " new discovery " into a book ...... :MLL:
Bye / Gruss Antonio :MG:
Hello everybody,
69 years ago the Scharnhorst was sunk after the North Cape battle.
Lets remember that heroic crew ... and all the sailors ( both sides 1932 + 18 ) which lost their life on that battle.
Enjoy the print realized by a friend ( of course a Scharnhorst lover ) made after my personal researches on her last camouflage. The Scharnhorst last camo now is well known by everybody and used also on the box of Dragon 1/350 kit.
As promised, to celebrate this day and to honour the Scharnhorst heroic crew, tonight at 19.48 ( Scharnhorst sinking time ) I will upload the correct Scharnhorst Baltic camouflage both sides ( tarnschema )
Bye Antonio :MG:
Hello everybody,
dedicated to the Scharnhorst brave crew and to her commander Kpt zur See Hintze.
Here the Scharnhorst Baltic camouflage with both sides being different.

Hello everybody,
introducing my new FACEBOOK personal page about KRIEGSMARINE.
@ Chattius,
surely one day when I will cover the Gneisenau you will find the solution to your camouflage dilemma.

würde sagen ab 09.01.1941 in Gotenhafen, Seebahnhof. Kurz vorm 2. Anlauf zum Unternehmen Berlin.
- Turmdecken sind dunkel, siehe die 15er Türme.
- Bordflugzeug auf dem Katapult.
Es waren vom 22.06.40 bis 12.12.40 keine Flugzeuge an Bord. Vom 12.12.

Vielen Dank an alle, besonders an Axel!! :TU:)

Hallo Halina,
Hello everybody,
if this can be of any help, having been there recently, I can guarantee you that the photo of Scharnhorst you are discussing was taken in Gotenhafen Seebahnhof pier, and not into the Hafen Becken IV that correctly Andreas Wolfer showed you with the photos of Prinz Eugen anchored in there during Adm Lutjens review before Op. Rheinubung.
Bismarck, Tirpitz and Scharnhorst photos I have seen so far, were all taken into Seebahnhof anchor place, the liegerplatz at the entrance of the harbour ( it has been modified after the war ) and never inside the Hafen Becken IV.
I have seen photos of Adm Hipper, Prinz Eugen, Lutzow, Nurnberg and light cruisers into the Hafen Becken IV, but never Bismarck, Tirpitz or Scharnhorst anchored in there.
I took hundreds of photos of that harbour and sailed into the harbour too all over the places with a local ferry boat, so you can trust me about it.
Bye / Gruss Antonio :MG:

Hi Antonio,
may we hope for the Light Cruisers in the same way some day? Thanks for your magnificent posts.
Bye
Eugen
Hello everybody,
@ TheGreenMachine,
the modifications on the main turret A-Anton rangefinder have been done on the Scharnhorst class following what has been done on the Bismarck class too. The A-Anton main turret was made " slave " of the B-Bruno turret also when firing on local control, and her heavy rangefinders being removed, and in this way helped also the weight on the bow area, making it lighter with a lot of advantages.
The solution to place an anti-aircraft gun on top of B-Bruno main turrets was common on almost all the KM warships at a certain point, to reinforce the A/A firing power from an highly placed position.
Similarly they evaluated all positions on the upperworks fwd and aft, as well as the funnel platform where they installed another 20 mm C38 flak vierling.
Unfortunately we did not see the Gneisenau rebuild being completed with new radars and A/A layout solutions, ... that was going to be very interesting in my opinion.
@ EuGu,
YES, I promise that pretty soon I will post the entire light cruisers series of same drawings, from Emden to Nurnberg.
Maybe ... also the KM destroyers one day ... as I have almost all the information I need to make it, ... but I need to translate them into the graphic drawings, ... with my 3 views approach.
Bye Antonio :MG:
