Hallo Thomas!

Darius  :MG: nennt folgende Alternativen:
a) MEMELLAND ex VALDONA, Frachtdampfer, 3037 BRT,
b) MEMELLAND ex JULIA, Frachtdampfer, 1890 BRT.
c) MEMELLAND, Motorschiff, 231 BRT

According to M. Morozov's opinion, attack was made against STANJA, but escort didn't see it.

Hello Igor,
The attack of M-172 was at 9.49 (Moskow time). STANJA was dismissed at 11.00 (MEZ) to Vadsö. That means, that STANJA had left the convoy about 49 minutes before the attack has happened. I suppose that STANJA was dismissed near Ekkeröy.

Target of M-172 was a convoy with one merchant ship and two escorts. --- I suppose, one of the four escorts was marching a few miles ahead, so was not recognized by the Russian submarine, another one was marching on the starboard side of the convoy and eventually hidden behind MEMELLAND.

The attack position of the submarine is not clear to me, as I don't find any place named Sturskaer, neither in GOOGLE nor in my ADAC street-map of Western-Europe. In my opinion it is not very conclusive to give a landmark for an attack which probably happend in the middle of the Varanger Fjord, when the convoy passed  from Varangerhalvöya coastline to Sör-Varanger. Do you have the nautical position of M-172's attack ?

Best regards
Thomas

Hello Thomas! I have no exact position for M-172 but in russian she attacks in area of island Стуршер. This is a little island SW of Kiberg on soviet maps. https://www.google.ru/maps/place/70°14'57.5%22N+30°53'39.0%22E/@70.2491413,30.890911,16.16z/data=!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x45cb48ce189d4a0f:0x21475859b53b8dad!2zOTkwMCDQmtC40YDQutC10L3QtdGBLCDQndC-0YDQstC10LPQuNGP!3b1!8m2!3d69.7269192!4d30.0450432!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d70.2492936!4d30.8941567?hl=ru
09.49mask=08.49DSZ, as it was measured in April 1942, so good 2+ hours before STANJA leave. But i think S. may in fact go some away from MEMELLAND, screened by two from convoy escort

Stimmt, Igor

Difference in time between Moscow and Berlin in 1942 was 1 hour. 2 hours  when DSZ ends (in 1942 - November 2nd)

Igor, you convinced me.
The distance that the convoy can cover at a speed of 10 knots (18 km/h) in 2 hours (between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) is 36 km. The shortest distance between the Varanger Peninsula and Kirkenes is 40 km, and that is the line between Ekkeröy and Kirkenes (distance measurement with Google).

Therefore it is correct, that the convoy at Sturskär (Ssturscher), where the attack took place at 8.49 a.m. (German summer time), still consisted of the two merchant ships STANJA and MEMELLAND. (STANJA was only released at Ekkeröy around 11 a.m.). Both merchant ships had been possible targets.

But why does Miroslav favor the STANJA?
Many greetings, Thomas
