The "U-boat" attacked by TALISMAN on 8 December 1941 was not U 79 but actually the Italian torpedo-boat ORIONE who had one rating killed by the machine-gun fire from the submarine and later hunted the submarine dropping 43 depth-charges.

The submarine attacked by TALISMAN on 14 December was the Italian DAGABUR who received a shell hit which caused a leak. U 561 was not the submarine attacked, she was in dock at the time in Brest.

No attack by UTMOST on 12 December 1941. Four torpedoes were fired (not 2) at 0131/13 December on FABIO FILZI and CARLO DEL GRECO and destroyers DA RECCO and USODIMARE but they missed. UPRIGHT attacked the same convoy, firing three torpedoes then a fourth and sinking both merchant vessels.

So far I have not found any evidence that AVIERE was present and attacked by TORBAY at Navarino. I did find an Italian report mentioning the attack but no ship was hit and MAS 514 was sent to hunt the submarine. British author Chapman mentions that she damaged the torpedo-boat CASTORE but this is an error as this vessel was in Naples at the time.

Thank you for the info.
The submarine attacked by SOFIA apparently was bogus. TRUANT operated near Suda at the time (to the North-East at the time) and was not attacked. TORBAY arrived in the Suda area only the next day. She was off the eastern tip of Crete at the time.

09.12.41   1430   br   Porpoise   T   it   -M   Sebastiano Vernier   6310   =   S/ Navarino   4

15.12.41       br   Torbay   2T   it   -M   Sebastiano Vernier   6318   +   Kap Methene   4

Perhaps I'm mistaken but shouldn't the name of the vessel be Sebastiano Venier instead of Sebastiano Vernier?

Hello Platon,

Thank you very much for the confirmation. Btw, in a previous message you wrote:

"No SOFIA sunk on 11 December by TORBAY or any other vessel."

Does this mean that Torbay did not conduct any attack whatsoever on the date in question?

My understanding was that this was an attack with four torpedoes fired in two groups of two, with each of the freighters receiving two hits. Away from my sources at the moment though.

The freighters carried two German tank companies, which were much needed in North Africa at the time, so this was a very heavy loss.

Auf meinen eigenen Recherchen.

ZitatI can state with reasonable confidence that while the Royal Navy knew of her passengers before she left harbour (Naval Headlines 159 issued on 8 December 1100 hours states that she was to leave harbour on 8 December 1600 hours with 2,000 POW), it is exceedingly the  commander of HMS Porpoise could have known this, since he would have been at sea well before the naval headlines were circulated.

http://crusaderproject.wordpress.com/2009/04/20/italian-merchant-ship-tonnage-losses-during-crusader/

Alles Gute

Was genau ist denn naval headlines 159?

SC-404 was ostlich kap Sletnes, NW von Tana-fjord.

Hello friends,

this question might be slightly off topic but does anyone know which agent (submarine, aircraft, surface vessel) laid the minefield which caused the loss of the transports Cavarna and Cordelia on December 2nd, 1941 in the Black Sea off Bugaz? The sources that I have at my disposal are ambiguous to say the least.

Both ships sunk near Odessa, not Bugaz. They sunk in 46.01N/ 30.39E (or 46.01N/ 30.35E) - GORDELIA, 45.52,7N/ 30.43,5E - CAVARNA. Mine was laid by surface vessel, but certain names differ. One say DD BODRYI & CMYSHLENYI, but i can't find info about this minelaying. 16.10.41 by evacuating Odessa, M/S TSCH-15 laid mines on outer road. Maybe this mines, in drifting state, was reason? Or some other mines from soviet defensive barrages, laid by other ships. Aircrafts and subs didn't mining this area in that period, AFAIK.

There is a place called Bugaz, very close to Odessa, I wonder if that is the landmark used in the report?

The part about the soviet submarine seems to be in error though.

hello,

14905A / Talisman / attack position 38-00n 20-28e little South of Argostoli (Kephallonia). Remark ,,Konvoi Derna-Messina" depends on convoy being directed via Argostoli (possible) and should read ,,convoy Derna-Argostoli-Messina".
It is however, very questionable whether really TALISMAN was the attacker as the boat operated in the Kythera area at that time and according to 14906b attacked ORIONE in position 36-10n 24-36e at 08.12. a.m.. The shortest track between attack positions 14905a und 14906b is 250 sm, the boat can´t fly.

14919 / Talisman / Position 34-05n 25-39e is Soth of Crete and therefore - nautically - not in the Aegean Sea (target´s position)

14925 / Uproar / attack time 16.12. p.m. and observation time 17.12. a.m. don´t concur, is there, possibly, even a mix-up with the accidental sinking of U 557 by ORIONE ?

At 1217hours HMS Trusty (Lt.Cdr. W.D.A. King, DSO, DSC, RN) makes a torpedo attack on ' what is identified as ' an Italian Grecale-class destroyer west of Zakynthos island, Greece in position 37º46'N, 20º25'E. All torpedoes fired however missed their target. The attack was most likely against the Italian torpedo boat Orsa.
HMS Trusty is often credited with the sinking of the Italian merchant Eridano (3586 GRT) but this ship was sunk by HMS Perseus.

02001a-c / A / 03.12.41 / K-3

the well-known attack of K-3 against ALTKIRCH and 3 APC, where UJ 1708 was sunk, eventually, by gunfire, took place S resp. SW of Rolvsoey (cp. attacks b und c, approx. position 70.54n 23.46e).
But: positions in a don´t agree with that.
A-pos. 71.23n 23.22e too far to the North and, probably to the West, too, target´s pos 70.51n 25.50e seems to be correct in Latitude (70.51n), but wrong in Longitude (25.50e , Porsangerfjord) by 2 degrees, correct 23.50e

Aus dem Logbuch vom TRUANT folgendes dazu:

11.12.41
13.20 in position 012º Cape Drepano nine miles sighted masts and funnels of a tanker and a destroyer approaching harbour from seaward. A seaplane patrolling ahead of them had been seen for some considerable time beforehand. The enemy were expected to alter course to enter harbour in south side, but instead of doing so maintained course 125º keeping close to coast of Akrotiri on the north side. The tanker was mostly against the land and in the shadow and could not be seen easily or clearly. She was a large ship, heavily laden; two very thin funnels aft, place fore and aft were distinctive. The tanker was close 3.500 yards after some 35 minutes at speed. Just before intending to fire the tanker altered course away.
14.32 fired four torpedoes range 3.500 yards. 2m 30s after firing there was a double explosion which was very loud, probably torpedo hitting tanker and that was followed by many other smaller explosions.
14.50 periscope depth; observed tanker beam on and sinking on an even keel. [
Clouds of smoke were rising from the waterline below the bridge approx amidships. The destroyer was standing by the stricken ship, and not far from them was a splash, possibly that of a depth charge. There were two seaplanes in the air. Proceeded north at 120 feet. Depth charges thought to be from two destroyers started at 14.55 and continued until 17.16. Sixty depth charges dropped, all well clear and astern; enemy torpedoed in position 344º Cape Drepano 4.8 miles.

20.10 surfaced and proceeded towards Malta

HMS Torbay (Lt.Cdr. A.C.C. Miers, DSO, RN) attacks the Italian destroyer Vincenzo Gioberti, that is moored inside Navarin Bay with one torpedo. The torpedo had a gyro failure and so missed the target.

(All times are zone -2)
1650 hours – Fired a torpedo into the bay (through a gap between Sphacteria Island and the rocks to the south of it) against the Italian destroyer. The torpedo had a gyro failure and was seen to swerve to the right. The periscope was immediately lowered and Torbay was taken deep and away to the firing position at high speed. The torpedo passed overhead and made three complete circles round Torbay but fortunately did not explode.

HMS Torbay (Lt.Cdr. A.C.C. Miers, DSO, RN) sinks the Greek caique Maria / Kalamos 185 (45 GRT) with gunfire off Cape Methoni.
Later that day the folbot was launched again to attack shipping inside Navarin Bay. Once again the attempt fails. After recovering the Folbot party Lt.Cdr. Miers decided to try to torpedo the target from outside the harbour.

(All times are zone -2)
1020 hours - While trying to attack the Italian destroyers Strale and Scirocco that had left Navarin Bay a schooner was seen to come down the Methoni Channel. The attack on the destroyers failed due to a sudden change of course by both destroyers. Lt.Cdr. Miers decided to close the schooner to engage it with gunfire but had to wait till the destroyers were out of sight.
1040 hours - Surfaced in position 176º Pylos Light 5.5 nautical miles and sank the schooner with gunfire.
1044 hours - Dived and resumed patrol.
2215 hours - Launched the folbot again to attack shipping inside Navarin Bay. Due to the very calm weather it proved impossible to approach the target without being spotted. The folbot was recovered around 0240 hours the next day.

It is often stated that on this day HMS Torbay (Lt.Cdr. A.C.C. Miers, DSO, RN) torpedoes and further damages the Italian destroyer Aviere (1645 tons) at Navarino harbour. It is stated that Aviere was already grounded after being damaged on 19 November 1941 by the Polish submarine ORP Sokol.
Torbay attacked on this day what Lt.Cdr. Miers identified as an Clio-class (Spica-class) torpedo boat that was anchored in Navarino harbour. The target was however the destroyer Granatiere (a sister ship of the Aviere) that was not damaged in the attack as the torpedo hit the boom).
Later this day another torpedo was fired into the bay. The target was a merchant ship. The torpedo was heard to explode too soon. It most likely also hit the harbour defences.

(All times are zone -2)
0645 hours - Dived in position 220º Pylos Light 6 nautical miles.
1022 hours - In position 247º Pylos Light 2.0 nautical miles fired a torpedo. 6 minutes later the torpedo hit the target that was later observed with a hole in it's bow. (this was not the case).
1708 hours - In position 246º Pylos Light 2.3 nautical miles fired a torpedo. The torpedo was heard to explode 4 minutes later and most likely hit the harbour defences.

Platon

Regarding the attack by UTMOST on FABIO FILZI and CARLO DEL GRECO on 13 December 1941. Although he hit was claimed, it apparently missed because UPRIGHT sunk both ships at 0210. The position for UPRIGHT is incorrect it should be 40°09' N, 17°04' E instead of 40°10' N, 17°59' E. The position reported in the volumes of the Ufficio Storico (15 miles south of C. San Vito) is incorrect. Note that in "Navi Mercantili Perdute" the position of CARLO DEL GRECO is given as 15 miles south of Taranto while FABIO FILZI is given as 15 miles south of C. San Vito. Both ships were hit at about the same time. The Seekriegsleitung only mentions that both were sunk south of Taranto.
The attack by UPRIGHT was remarkable as it was calculated and fired strictly by ASDIC (although the ships were in visual contact). Since the two ships were seen by UPRIGHT travelling at 14 knots (UTMOSThad estimated at 15 knots), it is practically certain that UTMOST had missed.

Thanks for your corrections, Platon.
Not the slip of your pen caused my misinterpretation.
The assumption of LtCdr Cayley was since ever noted in line 10 "vermutetes Ergebnis: beschädigt". Therefore I had no motive to change the entry. But now I understand your objection. "Tatsächlicher Treffer" (being reflected in the outline table) should not be "verfehlt", right? Please notice, that I must not repeat the assumtion of LtCdr Cayley here. But the entry has to be "fraglich, nicht beobachtet" instead of "verfehlt". The remark says: Utmost signalled a hit, but the success could never got verified, as both vessels in the convoy were later sunk by UPRIGHT. Do you agree ?
With best regards
Thomas

Hello Thomas,

Yes, although Cayley claimed a possible hit, we must assume that he missed as about 40 minutes later both ships were still doing 14 knots according to UPRIGHT's report. This was calculated very precisely from ASDIC data and enabled Wraight to hit both ships from 4,500 yds. It is unlikely that one of the two ships was already hit and could still make 14 knots. Unfortunately, I have not located the Italian report which would have confirmed all this. Thanks.

La Difesa del Trafico Vol. II is clear that no other hits occurred than those by Upright.

This was an attack with a real operational impact in North Africa. In addition to two companies of German tanks (I believe 44 tanks), a battalion of Italian medium tanks (52 tanks) was on these ships, it appears.

Dezember (B-Datum). Zwei britische Unterseeboote kommen in Frage. PERSEUS meldete am 2. Dezember Dampfer verfehlt. Trusty meldete am 4. Dezember Zerstörer der GRECALE-Klasse versenkt. PERSEUS ging am 6. Dezember verloren, wir haben kein KTB.

Platon schreibt am 12.07.2007 in  --/>/> http://warsailors.com/forum/read.php?1,38864,38867#msg-38867
Zitatit is almost certain that ERIDANO was sunk at 0830/4 by HMS PERSEUS, the position given by Ron is correct (some reports also mention 6 miles -289° from C. Dukato), her only survivor reported that she torpedoed a ship at dawn on 3 December but he could easily have confused the dates. The attack by HMS TRUSTY was against a GRECALE class destroyer in 37°46 N/20°25 E and occurred at 1217/4. It could have been the torpedo-boat ORSA (which had a similar silhouette to GRECALE) which had sailed from Taranto at 2200/3 December for Suda Bay (Crete) where she arrived at 1520/5 December. However the attack was not observed and Lt. Cdr King reported the torpedoes missed, one of them circled and almost hit the submarine. King also heard 54 depth-charges at a distance. As far as I know no Italian destroyer reported attacking a submarine on that day in this area.

Brian schreibt:

Zitat von: uboat.net http://www.uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/3504.html
At 1217hours HMS Trusty (Lt.Cdr. W.D.A. King, DSO, DSC, RN) makes a torpedo attack on ' what is identified as ' an Italian Grecale-class destroyer west of Zakynthos island, Greece in position 37º46'N, 20º25'E. All torpedoes fired however missed their target. The attack was most likely against the Italian torpedo boat Orsa. -- HMS Trusty is often credited with the sinking of the Italian merchant Eridano (3586 GRT) but this ship was sunk by HMS Perseus.

CITTA' DI MARSALA was actually attacked with 3 torpedoes (not 2) in 38°02' N, 20°22' E about 10 miles SW of Argostoli not in 38.35n 20.27e which is North of Argostoli.

Platon

According to ULTRA messages intercepted by Bletchley Park, she was hit in the engine room, but could be towed into Argostoli (either by TURBINE or by a mine sweeper). Tug Bagnoli was sent out to assist. During the night 30/31 Dec she heeled over in Argostoli and then lay aground. She could at that stage no longer be unloaded. Hi Andreas.

Hello Thomas and Andreas,

CITTA DI MARSALA was towed by Italian auxiliary minesweepers and beached at Argostoli at 1510 the same day with a list of 35 degrees but almost completely covered with water. This was corrected after about 70 hours to a list of 17 degrees and the steamer MOTIA was sent to recover her cargo. She was eventually raised and towed by ARTIGLIO to Teodo on 28 July 1942 and later repaired at Cattaro, resuming service in October.

I do not think that Città di Marsala resumed service in October 1942. Wikipedia in a page about her and her nine sisterships cites a book by Bruno Balsamo on the Tirrenia fleet, which I unfortunately do not have, which claims that in October 1942 she was towed to Trieste, where she remained under repair at the San Rocco shipyard of Muggia until the armistice of September 1943, when she fell into German hands. It is indeed true that at the time of the armistice she was undergoing either repairs or maintenance in Trieste and lacked her engine, which had been sent to the builder - Franco Tosi in Legnano - for maintenance or repairs. She was still in this condition when on 17 February 1945 she was hit during an air raid and partially sunk, as shown by photographs taken in Trieste in May 1945. She was later refloated, repaired and resumed service with the new name of Città di Trapani in late 1947. I notice that Città di Marsala does not appear anymore in the "La difesa del traffico" chronology after December 1941, and that less than three months (28 July-October 1942) seem too little time to have fully repaired the damage caused by the torpedoing and partial sinking in Argostoli; which leads me to think that Balsamo is right and Proteus' torpedo effectively put Città di Marsala out of service for the rest of the war.
