Yes, indeed. VERSILIA blew up. The position quoted later in your text is more correct as TORBAY reported it as 37°14' N, 26°40' E while German sources reported it as  37°15' N, 26°43' E (the ULTRA signal erroneously translated it as 25°40' E). This was south-east of Patmos.

DZIK did not attack CHAMPAGNE (on 24 IX 1943 she was on her way home)

ASA-book resumes 3 attacks against CHAMPAGNE on 24.09.1943
I suppose, that the attack times 04h10, 18h00, and 20h00 were observed from CHAMPAGNE.
Two attacks were made by ULTOR: I have no time for the first attack, and I have 22h10 for the second attack.
A third attack was claimed for DZIK. Rohwer wrote: "The attack at 04h10 was claimed by DZIK, but the truth of the claim is uncertain".
From Platon I would need the time of the first attack from ULTOR. And from Crolick I would like to know, why it is quite impossible, that DZIK attacked CHAMPAGNE on her way home.

according to the KTB 1. Marinebordflakabteilung Süd 1st sighting was made at 01.05 when conning tower of enemy submarine was spotted and fired at by R-178, and the second one at 19.45. At 19.57 ship was hit by 2 torpedoes fired from enemy submarine (ULTOR).

DZIK's position at noon 24 IX 1943 was 40o14' N / 10o32' E - some 160 Nm from Bastia.

Lloyd's War Losses führt auf Seite 1755 "Naval Ships lost" for dieses Datum die griechische Caique "Evanghelistria" als Verlust ohne weitere Angaben. Kann jemand von Euch diesen Motorsegler identifizieren (Hafenkennung) und Angaben über die Verlustursache machen? Ich habe sie jedenfalls weder unter den U-Erfolgen der Achsenmächte noch der Alliierten.

Thanks a lot, Crolick. We have unsolved attacks of Greek KATSONIS during night 12/13 IX 1943 west of Skyros. But that location is, of course, too far away from Chania (Crete). Best regards, Thomas

The attacks by DZIK (19921a and 19921b) on 22.9.1943 were actually carried out at 1815 (DZIK) and 1812-1813 (German time) on F 450 and F 360. See KTB 4.Landungsflottille (T1022/3077) and KTB 2.Landungsflottille (T1022/3070).

folgende Meldung fand ich beim Mar.Kdo. Italien vom 12.09.1943.



Da ich keinen entsprechenden Eintrag in der Datenbank fand, könnte dich das interessieren und vielleicht kann ja jemand das Gefecht durch das KTB der 7. S-Flottille betätigen.

Da Katsonis am 14.09.1943 in der Nordägäis versenkt wurde, dürfte dieser Datensatz wohl nicht stimmig sein:

Da Katsonis sich bei seiner Versenkung wehrte und immerhin ein dt. Uffz. fiel, müßte dieses Gefecht doch als Datensatz aufgenommen werden?

Ich gebe Dir recht; die Versenkung der SINFRA sollte KATSONIS möglicherweise ehrenhalber zugesprochen werden, dies war aber bei Veröffentlichung von ASA nicht mehr haltbar, und so machte Rohwer einen Fehlangriff daraus.

Hier 2 Zitate aus dem Internet zum Verlust von Katsonis:
"On September 14th 1943, after a heroic battle against a German submarine chaser, off Skiathos island, KATSONIS sunk taking down with her 32 men including her CO."

"On September 14 however, while trying to intercept a German troop transport, she was attacked and sunk by the German submarine chaser UJ-2101. 32 men of the crew, including Cdr Laskos, went down with her, and 15 were captured."

Frage: Griff KATSONIS tatsächlich einen Transporter an; zum Beispiel ein von UJ2101 begleitetes oder gesichertes Schiff? Um welche Uhrzeit begann das Gefecht mit UJ2101? Wann wurde es erfolgreich beendet? Schönen Gruß, Thomas

Du hast doch mein Buch "Die Kriegsmarine in der Ägäis 1941-1944", da wird ab Seite 20 das ganze Gefecht beschrieben. Es began um 19.50 Uhr, die versenkung durch Rammen kannst Du hier lesen:

HMS Trespasser (Lt.Cdr. R.M. Favell, RN) attacks the Italian destroyer Euro with five torpedoes. No hits were obtained.

(All times are zone -3)
0905 hours - In position 7 nautical miles South-East of Cape Alupo sighted a destroyer wearing the Italian ensign. She did not fly a blue pendant meaning she was surrendering so therefore she was attacked. Five torpedoes were fired but no hits were obtained. The torpedoes are thought to have missed astern.
