15.03.43
12.30 sighted a large two masted caique bearing 240º towards Tholo, closed at full speed and at
13.35 surfaced alongside and placed prize crew and Sub Lt Perakis onboard. Arrangements had been made to rendezvous in Prinari Bay, Turkey, after dark in order to transfer stores and the caique, which was the Agios DIMITRIOS of 220 tons carrying 140 tons of ammo from Piraeus to Rhodes altered course accordingly
13.38 dived and watched caique proceed towards Cape Alufo.
At 15.32 two MTBs were seen close to the caique and escorted her towards Rhodes harbour which was entered at 16.40.
The boarding of the caique was evidently carried out with the greatest skill and the chances of detection were reduced to the barest minimum. As the CO states in his report however, such an operation should never have been attempted in daylight in an area when it is almost certain that all ships would be under constant observation by the enemy. After seeing that the caique had been captured PAPANICOLIS moved away from the vicinity. Bomb explosions were heard between 16.45 and 18.30, none of them close.

Lieber Byron

Rohwer:
17.01.43 08:45 gr  Papanikolis       -S Agios Stefanos               220 BRT  Prise bei Kap Maleas
16.03.43           gr  Papanikolis       -S Agios Stephanos             "klein"    versenkt (AR) SE Krio
16.03.43 20:30 gr  Papanikolis       -S Fiamenta                        40 BRT   versenkt (AR) SE Krio

Gebaut 1927, 46 BRT.

This time I'm searching for the name of the submarine which sank this small italian vessel on 3.3.43. Many sources, ASA included, credit Torbay with this sinking but looking at u-boat.net which has detailed descriptions of her patrols the sinking of this vessel is conspiciously absent.
Was it in fact Turbulent which sank her or some other sub?
Best regards,
Jan-Olof

TORBAY could not have sunk her as she was off Leghorn at the time and did not carry out any attack.
Actually two schooners were sunk off Cape Tindaro in the afternoon of 3 March 1943, GESU' GIUSEPPE E MARIA and PIER DELLE VIGNE. Since this was in the patrol area of HMS TURBULENT, it is highly probable that she was the culprit but we have no confirmation as she did not return from patrol.
Best regards,
Platon

Thomas

It is possible that HMS Thunderbolt (Lt.Cdr. C.B. Crouch, DSO and Bar, RN) was lost during the attack on an Axis convoy on this day. - According to Italian sources (kindly provided by Mr. Platon Alexiades) the following happened that day:

The convoy at the time (2219/14) of possible attack by HMS Thunderbolt on Esterel (about 6 nautical miles East of Capo San Vito, Sicily, Italy) was composed of the French merchants (in German service) Esterel (3100 GRT, built 1938) and Caraibe (4048 GRT, built 1932). They were escorted at that time by the Italian torpedo boats Sirio (escort leader), Orione, Cigno, Libra and the Italian corvettes Persefone and Cicogna.

It is not known if Esterel was attacked by a submarine or was torpedoed by an aircraft.
Italian tanker Sterope (10496 GRT, built 1940), had been torpedoed by aircraft at 2135/14.

The Italian tanker Sterope (10496 GRT, built 1940) had been part of this convoy, before being torpedoed by aircraft about an hour before (2135/14) and the Italian torpedo boats Pegaso and Generale Antonino Cascino were detached to escort her to Palermo.

The Italian torpedo boat Ardito had abandoned the escort earlier in the day because of engine defects. The two MTBS (VAS 231 and VAS 232 according to the Italian Official History (the action reports that Mr. Alexiades has seen mention only two “MAS” boats without identifying them) only joined Esterel a few minutes after she was torpedoed (probably they sighted the torpedo explosion and vectored in).

It is also possible that the corvette Persefone was not in the immediate vicinity as she was picking up three British airmen who had just been shot down (probably a Beaufort from 39th Squadron).
Following the attack the Esterel is towed to Trapani, where she arrives 1420 hours on the next day. She was later declared a total loss.
The Sterope is towed to Palermo and on 9 September 1943 scuttled at Genoa.

HMS Torbay (Lt. R.J. Clutterbuck, RN) attacks a convoy of Bastia, Corsica in position 42º50'N, 09º37'E. One torpedo is fired that missed it's target.

(All times are zone -1)
0845 hours - In position 42º50'N, 09º37'E sighted a convoy to the South-West. It had come out of Bastia and was steering 020 degrees. Started an attack.
0930 hours - Fired the one remaining bow torpedo at the convoy but it did not found it's target.

Thomas
