hi, byron,

Exkurs:

08.07.43
At 22.05 another caique, MIMIS, was seen. It was closed and boarded. The papers were removed and crew of four reluctantly embarked as they had no dinghy. The caique of 10 tons was sunk by demolitions which blew it into small pieces. Both these caiques were enemy controlled, the first by Germans, and the second by Italians, and they were used for carrying wheat from Salonika to Piraeus

Servus Thomas,

hier der ganze Bericht vom acten Juli 1943

08.07.43

05.10 dived in position two miles 350º from Pondikonissi and steering 360º.
05.25 I was delighted to see three blurs in the gloom which resolved themselves into a MV with escort vessel ahead and another astern. I was fine on his starboard bow and his course was the direct line from Lephtari to Pondikonissi.
At 0538 fired four torpedoes, range 1000 yards. One torpedo hit after 42 seconds, followed by a second at 47 seconds. I was on the point of firing the fifth torpedo when I saw the splash of a torpedo hitting right on the bows of the ship. Went deep but no counter attack.
At 07.00 came up. To my chagrin I saw the target stopped, beam on, at a range of five miles only, about six feet down by the bow. I turned to administer a coup de grace and closed at speed, intending to fire at a range of 5000 yards. Alas, when I was still at 7000 yards off she got under way again, turned her stern towards me and proceeded slowly up the searched channel.
At 20.45 I surfaced and closed a small caique of 15 tons GEORGIOS, in position 38º57N 24º00E. A boarding party searched the ship but found nothing of interest. The crew abandoned ship on sighting us and the caique was sunk by ramming her gently with our bows; number PI 2540.
A lad of twenty agreed to come with us. Some bread and coffee given to the men in the boat.
At 22.05 another caique, MIMIS, was seen. It was closed and boarded. The papers were removed and crew of four reluctantly embarked as they had no dinghy. The caique of 10 tons was sunk by demolitions which blew it into small pieces. KORREKTUR

Thomas,
schau mal das Datum in ASA

HMS Trident (Lt. P.E. Newstead, RN) attacks a the German merchant Gerda Toft (1960 GRT, built 1930) with 6 torpedoes in position 097 degrees, Cape Doro, 5 nautical miles. All torpedoes missed their target.

(beginning on the 7th, time zone -2 or -3)
2310 hours (7 July) - In position 38º18'N, 24º26'E sighted several ships to the North and North-East. Range was 4000 yards, their course was 180 degrees.
2316 hours (7 July) - The starboard wing destroyer altered towards at a range of 2000 yards. Lt. Newstead was forced to dive. Altered course to 180 degrees and prepared to surface as soon as the ships had passed.
2336 hours (7 July) - Surfaced to find one destroyer weaving astern of the convoy at 2500 yards range on R.D.F. The escort soon altered course away, the target was now visible at 3800 yards and was slowly but steadily closing.
0025 hours (8 July) - In position 097 degrees, Cape Doro, 5 nautical miles fired 6 torpedoes from 2500 yards. The target altered course so all torpedoes missed ahead.

HMS Trespasser (Lt.Cdr. R.M. Favell, RN) makes a torpedo attack on a convoy of two small merchant ships of about 3000 tons, thought to be Armed Merchant Cruisers. No hits were obtained.
These ships were the German auxiliary minelayers Brandenburg and Pommern escorted by SG 13 on passage from La Maddalena to Livorno.

(All times are zone -2)
1250 hours - In position 42º22'N, 10º38'E sighted two ships bearing 206 degrees coming straight towards. The ships were in line abreast and about 1000 yards apart. Turned towards and started attack.
1308 hours - Fired two torpedoes from 1700 yards. Targets speed was estimated as 18 knots. Both torpedoes missed due to a failed setup of the attack.

HMS Trespasser (Lt.Cdr. R.M. Favell, RN) makes a torpedo attack at a 6000 ton merchant vessel in position 42º46'N, 09º49'E and misses. One torpedo has a gyro failure and circles near the submarine

(all times are zone -2)
0830 hours - Fired four torpedoes from 8100 yards(!) at a 6,000 ton merchant vessel. No hits were obtained. One torpedo has a gyro failure and circles near the submarine.

The target was almost certainly the French (German controlled) tanker Champagne (9946 GRT) escorted by SG 10 as they had sailed from Bastia at 0700 hours for Leghorn.

The following is regarding attack 19411 in ASA (with thanks to Platon)

21 Juli 1943

HMS Templar (Lt. D.J. Beckley, DSO, RN) attacks the Italian submarine Axum with 7 torpedoes about 5 nautical miles North-West of Calvi, Corsica, France in position 42º35'N, 08º38'E. All torpedoes fired missed their target.
The Axum was en-route from La Spezia to La Maddalena and observed, in all, 6 torpedo wakes (7 torpedoes had been actually fired, the first torpedo was probably not noticed) and took evasive action. The periscope of the attacker was briefly seen but at such close range that the stern torpedoes were not fired as they would not had the time to be activated.

(All times are zone -2)
1320 hours - In position 42º35'N, 08º38'E sighted U-boat on a course of 210 degrees at a range of 4000 yards. Started attack.

1330 hours - Fired 1 torpedo from 1500 yards (more were intended but Templar was not kept at a steady depth). The torpedo missed.

1333 hours - Upon regaining depth control and return to periscope depth fired 4 torpedoes from 1500 yards. All missed again due to the target altering course.

1340 hours - Fired another 2 torpedoes from 3000 yards. Once again the torpedoes missed.
