SS SCIESA ist nicht möglich, da es nach aktuellem Erkenntnisstand am 11.11.42 von der USAAF versenkt worden ist.

Hello Thomas,

There was no attack at all by P.46 on 23 November 1942, on SCIESA or any other vessel. You correctly pointed out that SCIESA was already destroyed by that time. P.46 did attack with gunfire the small tug PORTO FOSSONE on the previous day but it escaped when her gun jammed.

In the book "La difesa del traffico con l'Africa settentrionale" Vol. VIII (edited by USDMM, Roma 1964)
on page 379 you find the following entry: "partenza il 18 ore 03.00 da Taranto per Buerat - Smg SANTAROSA - attaccato da Smg senza esito a 2000 metri dalla boa di Buerat il 23 alle ora 07.45 -
arrivo il 23 ore 08.30 a Buerat" (= SS SANTAROSA departed 18. Nov. 42 at 03h00 from Tarent to Buerat - attacked from submarine without success 2 km off Buerat on 23/0745 - arrived at Buerat on 23/08h30). I am mostly interested, which submarine may have attacked if not P.46/Unruffled.

Dear Thomas,

The volume "La Difesa del Traffico con l'Africa Settentrionale" is incorrect. The actual date is 21 November 1942 not 23 November. Even Official Histories can make mistakes! Vol. XIII "I Sommergibili in Mediterraneo" refers to the same incident but gives the correct date. I have checked the patrol report of SANTORRE DI SANTAROSA at the Ufficio Storico and there is no doubt that the date of the incident is 21 November and the time as 0740 (the Specchio gives the time as 0745), position 31°29' N, 15°46' E. The attacking submarine was HMS UNITED who fired 4 torpedoes from 2,000 yds at 0737/21 in 31°27' N, 15°45' E.

Mittelmeer, 11.11.1942, 16801, Turbulent:
zu den Verlustpositionen kann ich nichts beisteuern, aber ex-Name der "Bengasi" war nicht "Almenia", sondern "Almena". Juni 1940 in Casablanca lief sie ab 1941 als französisch "Saint Philippe", ehe sie am 01.10.1942 an den dänischen Eigner zurückgegeben und sofort durch die Deutschen übernommen wurde.

hat jemand nähere Informationen zu der 223 BRT großen "Barletta"? Ich habe nur das 1931 gebauten 1975 BRT große Passagierschiff dieses Namens, das während des Krieges unter der Bezeichnung "D.16" als Geleitfahrzeug/Hilfskreuzer eingesetzt wurde.

Also das ist jetzt NUM=16815 / SAFARI: Zielposition muss heißen Ras Ali (oder Ras el-Ali)
Bei dieser Gelegenheit nochmal: Die NUM ist eine Kombination aus Seite (ASA BUCH) und Sortier-Nummer.
Die NUM ist also variabel !! Fest steht nur die ID-Nummer. Sollte sich in einem Datensatz der Angreifer oder das Ziel ändern, sollte der Datensatz unter neuer ID neu aufgebaut werden. Aber da bin ich leider nicht immer konsequent.

hat jemand nähere Informationen zu der 223 BRT großen "Barletta"? Ich habe nur das 1931 gebauten 1975 BRT große Passagierschiff dieses Namens, das während des Krieges unter der Bezeichnung "D.16" als Geleitfahrzeug/Hilfskreuzer eingesetzt wurde.

Ich habs überprüft: es gibt keine BARLETTA (223 BRT). Es ist eindeutig der Hilfskreuzer BARLETTA (1975 BRT) gemeint.

Überhaupt habe ich den November komplett durchgearbeitet, da ist viel Neues zu finden, u.a. auch ein weiterer Angriff auf BARLETTA am 16.11. Da hatte Rohwer (zu Unrecht) den Tanker ABRUZZI im Visier. Der Angriff auf die BARLETTA fiel mir auf, als ich die Identität der BARLETTA wegen Deiner Anfrage überprüfen wollte, und im Register (nicht in der Konvoi-Tabelle) von "Difesa dell Traffico" auf eine weitere Erwähnung und einen weiteren bisher unbeachteten (allerdings erfolglosen) U-Boot-Angriff stieß. Also: Nachfragen lohnt sich oft mehr als man denkt. 

Schon wieder ganz schön spät geworden. Aber November ist wenigstens fertig. Also:

Bemerkung "nördlich des Syltefjord" stimmt nicht mit Zielposition überein. Zielpos. 69.56n 30.00e liegt südlich der Varanger-Halbinsel, der Ort "Syltefjord" am Batsfjord liegt an der Nordostseite der Varanger-Halbinsel.

16801/ TURBULENT: Both attacker and target positions are the same (this is rare!) 39°10' N, 09°39' E, see the German report of BENGASI in T1022/2574 (NARA).

16808/PARTHIAN: time of attack 1048, time of target 0950, position reported by submarine: 38°03' N, 11°51' E, position reported by target: 37°41' N, 10°48' E.

Your attack 16814 is an error, correct date is 16.12.1942 and the submarine was P.44 (later UNITED).

16917/UTMOST? correct target position is 3 miles north of C. Blanc (near Bizerta) and not NW of Trapani as listed, UTMOST was lost on this patrol so we do not know her attack position but she was in the general area and Italian radiogoniometry had pinpointed her signal of 1231 giving an approximate location of 37°50' N, 10°00' E.
