Hi All,
Attack by Dutch submarine O-21 on 31 August 1941

HrMs O 21 (Lt.Cdr. J.F. van Dulm, RNN) attacks the Italian submarine Emo with two torpedoes about 70 nautical miles East-South-East of Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy in position 38º53'N, 10º38'E. Both torpedoes missed their target.

Details:
(All times are zone -1)
0555 hours - Sighted Italian submarine (thought to be Marcello-class) bearing 280 degrees. Started attack.

0618 hours - Fired bow tubes 1 and 3 from 2200 yards. No hits were obtained. It was intended to fire four torpedoes but O 21 lost depth control during the attack.

0625 hours - Heard one explosion. HE ceased.

0635 hours - HE was heard again. Started reloading tube 1 and 3.

According to Italian sources submarine Emo was returning home after operating in the Atlantic, she witnessed a torpedo track passing 1000 meters astern followed by an explosion.

Details are from the patrol report of O-21 (to be found at the National Archives, London, in ADM 199/1119) and her log (in Dutch language, to be found at the Dutch archives at The Hague item no. 2.12.03.6409).
Target identification with thanks to Platon.

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I have sent you some relevant pages of the patrol / passage reports of Talisman and Otus through e-mail.
The log of Talisman for August 1941 is not available at the National Archives (did not survive) and i have put the log for Otus on my 'to do list' for my visit to the NA later this year.

Kind regards,

UBOAT.NET: http://www.uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/3497.html

16.08.41
20.25 in position 149º Cape Matapan 5.3 miles sighted 188 ton schooner rounding Cape Matapan heading east for Elaphonisos Channel; turned northwards to intercept.
20.47 surfaced and closed at full speed under cover of gathering dusk.
20.17 sighted schooner, moved submarine into a position between her and the land and opened fire at point blank range. The target was so difficult to see in the now pitch darkness and despite the advantage of flashless propellant the gunnery was so ineffective that cease fire was ordered after eighteen rounds.
21.40 in position 104º Cape Matapan 1.3 miles submarine was put alongside the schooner, whose crew had moved off in their boat, and the vessel was destroyed with a TNT charge. The fore hold was filled with boxes of raisins and the after hold with drums of oil  [PI 188  Evangelistria, 25 GRT]

Byron

Hello Thomas,

I have not yet revised the TETRARCH page in Uboat.net. You are correct in noticing the error:
HMS TETRARCH fired two torpedoes at the torpedo-boat PERSEO at 1828/16 August 1941 just off the entrance of Benghazi harbour from about 3,500 yds. The torpedoes hit the boom defence net. The target was correctly identified as PERSEO. The torpedo-boat CALLIOPE was actually at Tripoli at the time and would leave shortly on convoy escort duty.

Best regards,

Platon
