Hello friends, my first post on this new forum.

29.09.40   1839   br   Osiris ?   T   it   -D   Carmen   1434   +   41.17n 19.11e

According to Platon, Osiris could not be responsible for the loss of Carmen given the fact that she was not in the area. See this old thread:

Jan-Olof

Hello,

perhaps I'm missing something but wasn't Provvidenza sunk by Truant on 22.9.1940 rather than being damaged?

Best regards,

Jan-Olof

Thanks Jan-Olof. I had completely forgotten the (deadly) second attack.

Am 24 Oct 2006 schrieb mir Erling Skjöld:

"O.C. / Seal lost 6.9.1940 off Terningen Lighthouse. What place did RUBIS lay her mines on 26.6.1940? -- The position is not given in the Norwegian loss reports nor in German KTBs, and therefore difficult to compare with minefieldposition."

Nun, laut Rohwer legte RUBIS 32 Minen ab Position 62°28'N 05°20'E.

Platon Alexiades

Hello Thomas,

The position of RUBIS' minefield given by Rohwer is an error. Correct position is reported as one mile from 63°13' N, 07°52' E 32 mines SH4 mines laid at a depth of six feet between 0300 and 0415/26 June. She may have sunk UJ D on 7th July in Qu AF 8342, this is about 6-7 miles from the minefield. The position reported by UJ D could be slightly in error and the actual position of the minefield may have been slightly off.

Thanks a lot, Platon.

FD.18 (PORPOISE, 14 Juni): 63°30'N 08°09'E Ramsöy Fjord
FD.20 (RUBIS, 26 Juni):      63°13'N 07°52'E
FD.21 (NARWHAL, 4 July):   63°15'N 07°34'E
FD.22 (NARWHAL, 27 July): 63°16'N 07°13'E

Hello Thomas,

I agree that NARWHAL's minefield is probably the one that accounted for UJ D but there will always be an element of doubt. RUBIS was supposed to have laid her mines in 63°13' N, 07°52' E but it is quite possible she was a few miles short. NARWHAL was sunk before she coud lay F.D.22. As far as I know she is the only submarine to have been lost through a B-Dienst intercept.

Frage von Jan-Olof
HMS L 27 (Lt Campbell) attacked four Elbing-class destroyers with two torpedoes on September 19th off St Valery as claimed by Hezlet. If so, does anyone know the identity of these destroyers?

Die Bezeichnung ELBING-CLASS DESTROYERS ist mir unklar. Platon entgegnete Jan-Olof: "Actually Campbell described them as four WESER class minesweepers".  --/>/> http://warsailors.com/forum/read.php?1,52889,52890#msg-52890
