I am trying to find out which submarine was attacked by U 394 on her last patrol. I suspect it was probably the Soviet V.3 or perhaps V.4 which were on passage from Lerwick to Polyarnoe. As U 394 was lost with all hands on this patrol we do not have precise information as to the time of the attack but position was AB 9158. Any help is appreciated.

Many thanks,

Platon

Hello Platon,

Miroslav Morozov gave during the passage from "V-3" and "V-4" the following information:

- "V-3" saw on the 02.08.1944 08:03 (I think, its Moscow time) the periskop of a non-friendly submarine and left the region in surface position for Polyarnyy. On the 6.08.1944 (01:46) the "V-3" arrived in Polyarnyy.

- "V-4" left Lerwick 27.07.1944. During the passage the "V-4" two times avoided a contact with the foe (two times they observed planes and one time the periskop of a submarine from the opponent. 05.08.1944 (13:00) "V-4" arrived in Polyarnyy.

Immer eine Handbreit Wasser unter den Kiel (Bcегда семь футов под кильем)!

This was V-3. Om 2.8.44, 08.03msk, sub detected west from Hammerfest unknown submarine's tower. V-3 maximized her's speed and take unknown sub to her stern. 08.25msk muffled explosion was heard, like from torpedo or mine. V-3 has no damages.
