British submarine HMS SIMOOM (P225)

Yesterday, 23 September 2017, we dived, examined and documented the British submarine HMS SIMOOM (P225), which sank with all hands during November 1943 at the northwest of the island of Tenedos due to a mine collision of the German mine field no. 7, which was laid by the minelayer BULGARIA on 22/23.09.1941. The wreck was respected and approached as a marine grave yard.

HMS SIMOOM was a British S-Class submarine constructed in 1942 by Cammell, Laird & Co, in Birkenhead, Great Britain. On 2 November 1943 under the command of Lt. Geoffrey Deryck Nicholson Milner, she sailed for a patrol in the Aegean. It was her 7th war patrol in total and 5th in the Mediterranean. On 05.11.1943 she received a signal to patrol off the entrance of the Dardanelles, five marine miles west of the island of Tenedos (Turkish Bozcaada). On 13.11.1943 she was ordered to return to her base in Beirut. The submarine never arrived and was declared overdue on 23.11.1943.

During 2016 our team member Selçuk Kolay found a British S-Class submarine off the island of Tenedos with an extensive damage near the starboard hydroplane. Later on was proved to be the lost submarine HMS SIMOOM. This year's task was to carry out a further examination and documentation of the wreck, as well as a comparison with the results of our archival work. In accordance to the war diary of the German Naval Command South on 22 September 1941 the auxiliary Axis minelayer BULGARIA escorted by the Italian T-Boats MONZAMBANO, CALATAFIMI, SIRIO, ALDEBARAN and ALCIONE left the port of Thessaloniki to execute the "Operation Bulgaria" (Unternehmen BULGARIA). The goal of this operation, which was approved on 18.09.1941, was the deployment of 10 minefields from the entrance of the Dardanelles to the southeast of the island of Tenedos. The results of our effort shows that HMS SIMOOM is sunken in the area of the German mine field no. 7, that for we assume that the sub had hit a German mine while running on the surface as the hydroplanes still in closed position until today.

September 2017.
