Minensucher M18 & M30

I've noticed launch of the great new project "HMA: deutsche Minensucher" congrats

Thus I have one question related to M18 and M30.

Based on the information from the site it seems that both boats were in Norway in July 1941.

However based on ULTRA signal both M-boots were escorting blockade-runner ERMLAND from La Pallice on July 15th, 1941.
ULTRA might not be correct so I would like to know if anyone have access to KTB of 3-MSFl. for that time and can verify what M-boote were escorting ERMLAND?

As far as I can learn from NARA (Reel 3059, PG 49912) it was not the blockade runner that was escorted on 14./15.07.41 from La Pallice to St.Nazaire, but the tanker ERMLAND. I understand that she was escorted by M18, M19 & M30 which were allocated to 8.M-flotilla.

Ich habe den Vorgang bei allen 3 Minensuchern eingetragen.
Das Problem kann ich nicht lösen, aber vielleicht ergibt sich eine Erklärung im Lauf der Zeit.

I have downloaded the mentioned NARA roll but I'm unable to locate any reference to ERMLAND? Could you please help me?
KTB for 3.MSFl is just 2 pages long and don't have any relevant information.
I do see M.18, M.19 and M.30 in St.Nazaire and La Pallice based on KTB Abschnitt Maschine and that M.30 was send to escort a tanker on July 14th.
But nothing more.

Indeed, ERMLAND is not mentioned by name, but that it was a tanker being escorted is mentioned twice (by M19 & M30).
So, my deduction is that the ERMLAND of your DEFE based info for 15.07.41 was the tanker ERMLAND, and not the blockade runner.
Even more so as the fleet tanker was in the region at that time for sure.
M18 only mentions 'Geleitzugdienst' for the same time window and location. This is why I think that these vessels were in company.
However - better evidence welcome.
Are you able to give the DEFE reference?

Blockade runner Ermland had already arrived in Bordeaux on 03.04.1941. Renamed Weserland, she left Bordeaux in October 1942. Had she been in that port for the whole time?

Die beiden Booten waren Juli 1941 8. Minensuch-Flottille unterstellt und sie waren in der Biskay eingesetzt.

"Ermland" wurde 14.-15. Juli 1941 durch M 18 und M 30 von Royan nach St. Nazaire.

Angehängt eine Liste über Boote und Kommandanten der 8. M.S.Fl. 20.4.1941 bis 31.12.1942 basiert auf KTB 8. M.S.Fl.

Also doch kein Tanker. Dann ist der Blockadebrecher also in den französischen Häfen weiter verlegt worden (harbor hopping).

Oder es war der Dampfer Ermland (Baujahr 1920, 987 BRT, ex Angeln, Nordmark, Faust laut Dinklage, Witthöft, "Die deutsche Handelsflotte 1939-1945").

Hallo,
HAPAG Frachter ERMLAND schon am 04.09.1939 in Kobe als Etappen-V-Schiff in WESERLAND umbenannt. Also solches 1940 als Versorger in Fahrt gesetzt und 04.04.1941 ein in Bordeaux. Meines Wissens bis zum nächsten Auslaufen 18.09.1942 nach Fernost zum Laden dort verblieben.
Allgemein wurden Schiffe im einfachen Sprachgebrauch oft als Dampfer benannt, eben auch immer wieder in amtlichen Sachen, wie einem KTB.
Warum Dinklage allerdings auf der Heimreise durchgängig weiter ERMLAND benutzt, ist unklar...
Die "kleine" ERMLAND habe ich nicht geprüft, da wohl außer Diskussion - REINHARD

In dem KTB des M 30 wird "Ermland" sowohl als "Dampfer" und als "Tanker" benennt.

Hi Hägar,

Referring to your request. The ULTRA decrypts are in:

DEFE3/23/166, 167, 179, 187 and 218.

M 18 and M 30 are mentioned as escort to Ermland. M 19 and M 27 also sailed from La Pallice a little earlier (perhaps scouting ahead?). ORP Sokol only mentioned sighting two escorts, so they were probably M 18 and M 30.

Kontext der "Ermland" könnte die Verlegung der "Scharnhorst" mit Sicherung durch Zerstörer vom 21./22.07.1941 aus Brest nach La Pallice sein.

KTB 4. Sicherungsdivision könnte evtl. mehr Infos liefern...

In my opinion, ORP SOKÓŁ, being submerged, only had a limited overview.
So, there may have been more escorts around ERMLAND.
The reason for this addition is that in the KTB of M19 the tanker is also mentioned, see #5.

aus den beiden KTB der 8. MS-Fltl und von M 30 ist eine Beteiligung von M 19 an der Verlegung von La Pallice nach St. Nazaire nicht zu ersehen. Das Boot blieb in La Pallice.
