Werner Eckardt was my Dad's cousin. We spoke to his Widow and his nephew recently, and they both confirmed that Werner Eckardt was born in Hammerstedt, Thuringen, on 21/04/1923. He was a Diesel Machinist in the Kriegsmarine. He trained on U-37 and served on U-198 during her 200 day patrol under Werner Hartmann. Just before U-198 left for her fateful second patrol, Werner Eckardt got sick and was replaced for the patrol. He was captured in Holland at the end of the war and was briefly made a POW in the same POW Camp as his father, who had been drafted into the army.
Werner is currently in the database, but the information is inaccurate.
Werner died on 22/05/1995, Germany.

Cheers,

Rohan Eckardt

Looking at his uniform, it appears he was a Maschinengefreiter.

Many thanks for your contribution to our database.  :TU:)

Is it possible to have the photo a little bit bigger?

Thank you so much. No he was never in Japan or Australia. He was also born on Hammserstedt, not Magdala.

Cheers  :-)

He is the same Werner Eckardt. I gave the original information to Herb on what little I knew at the time, however, the current information I've provided supersedes the original and is 100% correct.

Cheers  :-)
