11.-13.09.1943, USS SAVANNAH (CL 42): 60 Stunden von Salerno nach Malta

Hallo zusammen,

ich habe hier ein für mich bisher eher überlesenes Ereignis zum Starten eines eigenen Themas genommen.

Am 11.09.1943, 09.44 Uhr, wird der Kreuzer USS SAVANNAH (CL 42) von einer Gleitbombe vor Salerno getroffen. Soweit bekannt.

Neben den 197 Toten gibt es aber auch ein "Wunder". Vier Mann werden im Radioroom III eingeschlossen.
Durch Rettungsmaßnahmen und die schnelle Verlegung des Schiffes nach Malta, gelingt es die Männer, nach 60 Stunden in der Falle, zu befreien.

Savannah came about for repairs at Malta at 1757 on 11 September 1943. Benson and Niblack (DD-424) escorted the cruiser, and Philadelphia, Mayo (DD-422), and Plunkett steamed in company with the trio until 0200. The ships came about just as another air raid struck the area and Allied and enemy fighters tangled directly overhead at very high altitude at 1805. The engineering crewmen struggled for eight hours until their herculean effort paid off and they finally re-lit all of the boilers. The ship steamed initially at 12 knots and increased to 18 knots, but although the crew pumped out enough water to raise the bow about a foot, the draft forward measured only 33 feet. The battered cruiser entered the Strait of Messina at 0645 on the 12th, and at sunset the following day reached the Grand Harbor at Valletta on Malta, where she moored bow and stern in Dockyard Creek. The damage trapped four sailors in the Emergency Radio Room, and they did not emerge into the light of day and breathe fresh air again until men built a cofferdam on the third deck and drilled through to them at 2030 on the 13th

Die Chronik hat einen kleinen Fehler bzgl. des Einlaufdatums in La Valetta:

Die Savannah (Capt Cary) wird von einer FX 1400 auf dem dritten 15,2cm Turm getroffen, die Bombe durchschlägt das ganze Schiff und reißt im Schiffboden ein großes Leck auf, durch das große Mengen Wasser in die Munitionskammern eindringen und eine Explosion verhindern (197 Tote). Am Abend gelingt es dem schwerstens beschädigten Schiff, mit eigener Kraft Malta zu erreichen
