Vor einiegn jahren verbrachte ich einige Tage in Bad Bevensen (bei Medigen) um den Gedenkstein von Fritz Hitze zu besuchen, Seine familie war Mueller und seine Nichte lebte damals noch dort,

Ich habe auch die Marinewerft in Wilhelmshafen, und graben in Den Nordfriedhof besucht. Ich habe grossen Respekt vor Kapitaen zur see Fritz Hitze, und auch Hans Langsdorff von KMS Graf Spee., beide maenner zeigten "Menchlichkeit"  Wir mein eigenes Vater gegenueber den 36 ueberlebenden von KMS Scharnhorst.

A few years ago, I spent some time in Bad Bevensen (Near Medigen) in order to visit the memorial stone of Fritz Hintze. His family were millers (Flour mill) and his niece still lived there at the time. I have the great respect for Captain Hintze, and also for Captain of the Graf Spee, Hans Langsdorff. both these men displayed  "Humanity", as I know my own father did torward the 36 survivors of Scharnhorst.

I also visited the dockyard in Wilhelmshafen where the Scharnhorst was built, and the Northern cemetery in Kiel where there are headstones of the 46 head who lsot their lives on 04/06/1940 when Scharnhorst was hit and damaged by a torpedo from HMS Acasta or a submarine after engaging with HMS Glorious, Acasta, and Ardent.

Re Number of crew on Scharnhorst. I found that the HMA list did not have all the names of the dead with headstones at the Nordfriedhof. The Nordfriedhof denkmal projekt was more accurate. I often wonder how may of the 46 were killed by the torpedo hit and explosion on 4/6/1940, and how many died when the water tight door had to be closed to stop the Scharnhorst from listing ?

Do you know if there were any Chinese civilians on Scharnhorst, as there were on KMS Graf Spee ?

Hallo zusammen,

ich möchte jetzt gerne mal auf meine Arbeit im FdW hinweisen. Die 46 gefallenen Marineangehörige betrifft nur die im gefluteten Abteilungen am 24. Juni 1940 geborgenen. Zwei weitere gefallene und zwar Dietsch und Heine, wurden in Trontheim beerdigt.

Somit beträgt die Gesamtzahl der Opfer 48 Marineangehörige

Ich habe aus dem Anhang von Deutschen ins Englische uebersetzt. In england scheint interesse an den schaden und dem versenkung der HMS Glorious, Acaasta und Ardent am 4. Juni 1940 zu bestehen.

08/06/1940             Date registered for the 46 seamens death.

09/06/1940             Scharnhorst anchored at Trondheim. two sailors buried at the military cemetery.

20/06/1940             Scharnhorst sails with minesweeper flotilla 3 minesweepers, 2 destroyers, and 2 torpedo
                              boats.

23/06/1940             Scharnhorst arrives in Kiel at 22.30 hrs.

24/06/1940             Docks in Dry Dock "C" and the 46 dead were retrieved from the flooded compartment
                             
27/06/1940             The fallen 46 seamen were buried in the Northern Cemetery (Nordfriedhof) in Kiel.

Hello Lance,

that's right. One small change: "compartments 11 to 1V" is not 100% correct. "compartments II to VI." have been flooded.

"compartments 11 to 1V" would read in German: "Abteilungen 11 bis 1V." II to VI are Roman numerals. So in English it should read "compartments II. to VI."

I hope what the translator is telling me is OK.

das ist richtig. Eine kleine Änderung: "compartments 11 to 1V"  ist nicht 100% korrekt. "Abteilung II bis VI." wurden geflutet.

"compartments 11 to 1V"  würde auf deutsch heißen: "Abteilungen 11 bis 1V." II. bis VI. sind römische Zahlen. Es müsste also auf englisch heißen "Abteilungen II. bis VI."

Ich hoffe das ist in Ordnung was der Übersetzter mir sagt.

danke fuer die korrektur. Ich hatte ein problem mit roemischen ziffern auf meinem computer.
Ich habe ein paar fragen.

Ich sehe, dass die Todesfaelle am 8.Juni 1040 registriert wurden, obwohl sie am 4.Juni 1940 gestorben waeren. war das wegen formalitaeten in Trondheim ?

waeren die 46 gefallenen in den ueberfluteten abteilen geblieben bis Scharnhorst das trockendock in Kiel erreichte ?

Waere es die traurige pflicht des kapitaens die wasserdichten Tueren der abteil nach dem Torpedotreffer zu schliessen ?

Gibt es eine Webseite die einen Plan, wo die abteile waren ?

Did the 46 fallen seamen remain in the flooded compartments of Scharnhorst until it reached drydock in Kiel ?

Would it have been the sad duty of the Captain to close the watertight doors of the compartments after the torpedo hit ?

Is there a plan of where the compartments would have been on a webpage ?

4th-8th June 1940.
