Thanks  to my good AIDMEN friends Marco Ghiglino and Domenico Clarizia, a small historical mistake has come to light. More mistakes of the same kind to come on next AIDMEN Bollettino, due in October:

So, no comment at all about this? Silence means confirmation?

So, no comment at all about this? Silence means confirmation?

Dear Thomas,

I am afraid that there is some translation misunderstanding here.
The BUFFOLUTO/WESTMARK wreck was found in La Spezia at the war's end and repaired post-war for the Marina italiana. The PANIGAGLIA wreck, found at Genova and not at  La Spezia, was raised post-war but destroyed in the explosion of 1947. VALLELUNGA's wreck was also at Genoa where she  was sunk in an air attack in May 1944.

As is well known, BUFFOLUTO was captured off Livorno on 9 September 1943 with only slight damage from the gunfire by BRANDENBURG and POMMERN, so she could easily undergo repairs by the KM and be commissioned as a minelayer.
According to Domenico Clarizia's notes, taken from KTBs, BUFFOLUTO was ordered to be repaired and converted into  a minelayer on 28.5.1944 to replace the damaged OLDENBURG; on 15.7.1944 she was still under repair at La Spezia, without a complement;  on 16.8.1944 the order was given to commission BUFFOLUTO as soon as possible  to replace the lost DIETRICH VON BERN taking over the latter's crew. From the end of August the name BUFFOLUTO does not appear any more in the KTBs, while WESTMARK was commissioned on 28 Sept. 1944. No reference was  found  by Clarizia of any intent to commission PANIGAGLIA as a minelayer.
The photos posted by Marco, which you probably cannot see on the AIDMEN forum (I shall mail them if you want), show that the AA machine-gun posts, the funnel and other details of WESTMARK in Genoa are exactly the same of the wreck of BUFFOLUTO found in La Spezia at the war's end (shown in the IWM photo).

PANIGAGLIA  was sunk in La Spezia harbour  by air attack in October 1943 and raised in April 1944, so it seems extremely unlikely that - given the very limited facilities of the Italian yards at the time - , she was repaired and commissioned as WESTMARK by 28 Sept. 1944.

And by the way, thank you for helping me to refresh my rusty German, as the AIDMEN did with your Italian.

Gruss Gott,
Francesco

WESTMARK
(*16.04.24) i.D. 15.12.1924 als ital.

Thomas

Der WESTMARK Eintrag findet sich in DDK Band III, S. 188
Jahreszahl 1944 (rot) nachträglich korrigiert.

Thank you, Thomas. By the way, just a small correction:WESTMARK was commissioned by the KM on 28.9.1944 (and not 1943). I hope to come back to you soon with some new info regarding  the GABBIANO-Class U-Jaeger.
Best wishes,
Francesco
