Sunk MTB-241.
« am: 02 September 2018, 18:22:10 »
Hi,

Colleagues,
Help me determine what target MTB-241 attacked before its death. I have very conflicting information. The British write:
Inevitably, perhaps, 241 finally fell to the enemy’s guns, in an action fought off the Dutch coast on the night of 30 March 1944, when five M.T.Bs took on a convoy of six merchantmen with an 18-strong escort, four M-class minesweepers, with a 6-strong escort, astern of this force, and eight R-boats ahead of it - horrendous odds indeed, especially since the enemy sighted the M.T.Bs before they could fully develop their attack. The latter’s response was swift and accurate, the minesweepers and R-boats putting down a curtain of heavy fire, and before White could properly disengage to the north-west, a 105mm. shell struck 241 a mortal blow underwater, in the engine room. Their boat completely disabled, MacDonald, White and the remainder of the crew were taken off by M.T.B. 224, and the crippled 241 taken in tow. About eight hours later, however, she rolled over and sank.

The Germans do not fix the battles with the MTBs on March 30, but on March 31 they write:
CONFIDENTIAL
31 Mar. 1944
North Sea:
On 31 March two harbor defense "boats were engaged with six or eight enemy PT-boats from 0000 to 0100 off Ymuiden. No effect was observed at' the enemy. No damage and losses occurred at
the own boats. Owing to radio Monitoring, several enemy PT-boats were then towed off in damaged condition.

One fight was on 03.30 near Somme mouth. 5 boats from 15 V-Fl., R.217/221, Von d. LIPPE and MFK HANS KORN. Vis-a-vis was 4-6 MTB and MGB. No losses on german side, claim for 2 burned and sunk MTB.
Or this was fight with Geleit 1237 - 5 MTB in AN8553/26. R-boote can beat off this attack, has 1 wounded, no claims for sinking.

Zitat von: Leonard Reynolds, Home Waters, page 123/124
Macdonald (SO 21th MTB) with 5 boats was sent to intercept a convoy (6 steamers) off Ymuiden, leading in 241 with 224 and 244 in the first division, while the second division consisted of 223 and 350. [following description of convoy 1237, TW]

Macdonald devised an approach that he hoped would allow him to penetrate the screen and made a zone torpedo attack on the rich harvest of shipping … Unfortunately they were sighted at the begin of the attack, and were met by very heavy fire from the R-Boats and the M Class ships. Macdonald (241) engaged to the north-west across the bow of the convoy, but 241 was hit underwater in the engine room by a very large shell – probably a 105mm from the Ms – and completely disabled. Macdonald transferred to 224 (Lee), leaving 244 (Sauders) attempting to tow 241 home stern-first.

(…) After 244 had towed 241 laborously towards base for six hours, the tow parted. By this time, 241 was awash aft and had a heavy list to starboard, The tow was replaced, but again parted, and at 0800, eight hours after the attack began, 241 rolled over and sank. But the crew were all saved.

What was the composition of convoy 1237? Like the English or the other?

Reynolds is descibing as follows:
6 Steamers, sweeping ahead 8 R-Boats of the 9th flotilla, astern of them came 4 large M class minesweepers of the 27th flotilla, while close escort was provided by 6 VPs of the 8th and 11th flotillas.
Best regards

Thank you, Maurice.

This is very interesting information. Here we are talking about a battle at the mouth of the Somme on the night of March 30/31, 1944. But the battle in which the MTB-241 was sunk was off Ymuiden, in the zone of responsibility 1. Sicherungsdivision.
