Hallo,

ich suche Pläne zur O-Klasse und zur H-Klasse die im NARA archiviert sind.

Bin durch Zufall vor Kurzem an eine Auflistung der NARA-Bestände bzgl. der Schlachtschiffe F (Bismarck), G (Tirpitz), H und O gekommen. Leider habe ich absolut keine Ahnung, wie ich an die Pläne komme. d.h. wo ich bestellen muss... Wie die Pläne ausgegeben werden (Papierform, Micro-Film, DVD)... und was mich der Spaß kostet. Möglicherweise ist jemand von Euch im Besitz dieser Pläne und Derjenige wäre bereit mir Diese (gegen Aufwandsentschädigung) zukommen zu lassen? In digitaler Form oder in Papier-Form...wäre mir beides recht.
Oder es kann mir Jemand erklären, wie man beim NARA bestellt. Und was das ungefähr kostet.

German Battleship Plans, 1937-45, Seized by the U.S. Naval Technical Mission to Europe


The records consist of 63 ships' plans and documents (excluding duplicate copies) of German Navy battleships built or under contract during the World War II period.  All but one of these items were prepared by German naval or commercial shipyard authorities during the period 1937-43; one was prepared in June 1945 at the obvious request of U.S. Navy authorities.  Many of the plans include pencil annotations that could only have been added by U.S. Navy authorities after the war.

These materials were likely seized by the U.S. Naval Technical Mission to Europe in June-July 1945 and subsequently transferred for exploitation to the United States. Within RG 19, the General Correspondence Files, 1940-45, contain similar records relating to German naval vessels' features and specific references to records seized relating to German battleships.

The series includes nine plans or drawings for the German battleship Bismarck, which was sunk in an epic naval campaign in May 1941. Twenty-six plans and documents are for the battleship Tirpitz, a threat to Allied shipping until its destruction in a Norwegian fjord by air attack, November 1944. Twenty-four plans are for Battleship "H," the next German battleship in line for production. The H Battleship was designed over the 1936-39 period. Construction had begun before war's outbreak. Further construction was suspended. Three drawings are for the planned "O"-class battleship (or more properly, battlecruiser) designed in 1939 for the future battle fleet.  There is also one plan of the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper.

The majority of these plans illustrate the locations and operations of the ships' onboard ventilation and water systems. This may indicate the specific postwar interests of the U.S. Navy in selecting these plans for review and exploitation.  Many plans include extensive details of the ships' construction, interior design, and equipment. German Navy technical specialists annotated some plans to indicate desired changes or revisions in specific systems. All descriptions and identifications are in the German language.

The originators of these plans include: The Amt (later Hauptamt) für Kriegsschiffbau, a bureau within the Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine (O.K.M., or Naval High Command); the Schiffbauressort Marinewerft (later Kriegsmarinewerft) Wilhelmshaven, the ship construction department at the Navy Yard in Wilhelmshaven; and the shipbuilding firm Blohm & Voss in Hamburg.  The evidence suggests that these materials had been stored in Wilhelmshaven and were likely seized there by the Technical Mission.

Most plans are drawn to scale 1:100, but others range in scale from 1:50 to 1:500.  The size of the plans generally ranges from 24" – 30" in height to 48" – 60" in length.  The plans' physical composition varies greatly from cloth-based backings to very fragile tracing paper, but also include photostatic reproductions and blueprint-quality paper. Preservation copies have been made for research use to spare the badly damaged plans from handling.

For Bismarck and Tirpitz, two of the most significant warships of World War II, the plans complement extant operational records in detailing their role in the Battle of the Atlantic.  Taken as a series, the plans collectively document the evolution and planning of German capital ship design and technology immediately prior to World War II.   The plans document the U.S. Navy's postwar exploitation of captured German naval materials for possible use in designing American warships. 

No comparable plans for World War II German warships are available elsewhere among NARA holdings.  The Bundesarchiv-Abt. Militärarchiv as Bestand RM 25 in Freiburg/Br., Germany holds the principal collection of German naval vessels' plans (the records of Hauptamt Kriegsschiffbau within the Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine).  It is very likely, however, that the ships' plans described here are not duplicated among the Bundesarchiv's collection and therefore constitute unique documents. 

Related records are scattered among various NARA holdings.  War diaries and action reports of the Bismarck and Tirpitz are reproduced on National Archives Microfilm Publication T1022, (Records of the German Navy, 1850-1945, Received From the Naval History Division). These records are described in the forthcoming Guides to German Navy Records No. 4: Records of German Navy Operational Commands in World War II (scheduled for publication in 2001).  Within RG 19, the Bureau of Ships' general correspondence, 1940-45, includes specific listings of documents concerning the Bismarck and Tirpitz received from the Technical Mission to Europe in July 1945 (file C-EF 30/BB, 470: 09/06/01, Box 412), as well as technical handbooks and photocopies of ships' plans for the German Navy's Prinz Eugen-class cruisers (file C-EF 30/CA [Bulky Enclosures], 470: 16/14/07, Box 179).   Within RG 38, the Naval Technical Mission to Europe Serials and Enclosures, 1945-47, include an original German summary report on the ordnance status of the Bismarck at the completion of training (Serial 1384, 370: 15/20/07, Box 62) and original German handbooks pertaining to ventilation and water systems on board cruiser Admiral Hipper (370: 15/21/07, Boxes 71-73).  Additional documentation regarding these warships' operations are located among several series of records of the Office of Naval Intelligence in RG 38.

Hallo Thorsten,

auch ich würde mich prinzipiell für diese Quellen interessieren.
Leider kenne ich mich im Hinblick auf diese Thematik der NARA Rollen, respektive derer Beschaffung nun leider gar nicht aus.
Vielleicht kann uns ja ein Wissender aus dem Forum weiterhelfen!

Hallo zusammen!

Wenn es um die Bestellung von deutschen Marine-KTB´s (publication number T1022) geht, wie ich es beispielsweise hier tat, und die gewünschten Filme (rolls) aufgrund der entsprechenden Inhaltsverzeichnisse (guides) kennt, so kann man sie über dieses Formular per Fax bestellen. Die Bezahlung erfolgt über Kreditkarte und die Kosten betragen 125/135 Dollar pro Film, unabhängig vom tatsächlichen Umfang. Der Zeitbedarf für so einen Bestellzyklus bei reibungsloser Abwicklung beträgt etwa 4 Wochen, kann aber auch leicht das Doppelte betragen.

Möchte man Scans von Plänen, die nicht digitalisiert sind, wird es komplizierter, denn NARA macht das dann nicht selbst und man benötigt einen "vendor" vor Ort, der das erledigt. "Meiner" verrechnete 40 Dollar pro Stunde und 7 Dollar pro Scan für NARA. Es wurde allerdings eine exzellente Qualität geliefert, NARA behält sich allerdings aufgrund des jeweiligen Planzustandes vor, die Scanerlaubnis zu verweigern und macht das auch. Grundsätzlich ist es so, dass man im Online-Katalog über die angegebene Kontaktmail mit NARA in Verbindung tritt. Man erhält dann auf Wunsch nähere Informationen zum Bestand (National Archives Identifier innerhalb jeder Record Group) und eine Liste mit mehreren "vendors", die man dann beauftragen kann, was bei mir allerdings nicht geklappt und dann erst über Umwege funktioniert hat.

erst mal vielen Dank für die Erklärung "wie das grundsätzlich abläuft" wenn man Pläne anfordert. Ob die Pläne digitalisiert sind, oder ob man Papier-Kopien anfordern muss, geht leider aus dem Online-Katalog nicht eindeutig hervor.
Ich werde jetzt mal eine Anfrage-Email an die NARA schicken. Im Online-Katalog ist unter dem Suchergebnis die betreffende Email-Adresse angegeben.

eine Frage... an welchen Plänen aus der RG19 bist Du speziell interessiert? Bismarck, Tirpitz, H, oder O??

Falls das Ganze digital von statten geht, kann man möglicherweise alle Pläne der RG19 auf DVD beziehen. Ich habe jetzt mal eine Anfrage-Email an die NARA geschickt. Mit der Bitte... mir zu erklären, in was für einer Form (digital, Papier-Form) man die Pläne bestellen kann und wie hoch die Kosten wären.
Jetzt muss ich halt mal abwarten. Falls sich was tut, meld ich mich wieder.

Hier der neuste Stand der Dinge...

Das NARA hat geantwortet. Die Pläne der Auflistung sind alle in einer Außenstelle des NARA in Collage Park, Maryland archiviert. Leider sind die Pläne nicht digitalisiert und müssten deshalb gescannt werden. Der Mitarbeiter des NARA hat mir eine Liste von Personen gemailt, die im Auftrag von Interessenten Recherchearbeit bzw. Kopieren übernimmt. Hier wurde ich speziell an einen Mr. Edward Singer verwiesen. Dieser Herr verrichtet seine Dienste in dem kleinen Örtchen Collage Park. Er hat mir auch bereits geantwortet. Sein Stundenlohn liegt bei 35Dollar. Ich habe Ihn jetzt mal gebeten mir mitzuteilen, was es "in Etwa" kosten würde die 26Pläne über Schlachtschiff-H und Schlachtschiff-O zu scannen und mir das Ganze in digitaler Form (als PDF's per Mail, oder als CD-ROM/DVD) zukommen zu lassen. Es besteht ja auch die Möglichkeit die Menge der Pläne zu reduzieren und eine kleinere Auswahl zu treffen. Außerdem hab ich Ihn gebeten mir mal ein "Festpreisangebot" für den gesamten Auftrag zu machen.

Tja... jetzt heißt es wieder abwarten.
