ss Nemrac wa a very old Italian steamer, active in the Mediterrean.

Estland had a *Neeme* ex *Erland* This could be the vessel which was controlled.

Hallo Jaap,

We have (again) been looking at NEMRAC, and at NEEME, and in the proces stumbled on the website http://www.kasmu.ee/et/content/nemrac-0.

There seems to have been a NEMRAC in northern waters sailing under the flag of Estland in 1939...!
Extracted from a Google translation: this 1796BRT-vessel was built in 1877 in Glasgow, Scotland. Was sold to a British company in 1899, then to a French company in 1916 (home port Bordeaux, new name CARMEN), and 1923 once more sold to a an Estland company based in Käsmu and renamed NEMRAC (KTB U23 refers to the Est city of 'Küsmu').

In December 1939 sold to an Italian company and renamed AMICIZIA, fallen in German hands at the start of WWII, and seems to have been based at Memel in 1943.

What do you think? Could this NEMRAC, ex French CARMEN and later Italian AMICIZIA not be the NEMRAC controlled by U23 in Sep 1939?

Met vriendelijke groeten,
Frans & Walter

Interesting that CARMEN spelled backwards is NEMRAC.  :-o

... and that TD (of FMA-fame) was involved in writing up the history of the vessel!

I agree, *Nimrac* after all. I thought this oldie would be in the Med.
