ex Pionierlandungsboot
« am: 25 Januar 2017, 16:33:26 »
I attach two photos of a Greek naval vessel moored at Symi Island in 1952. On the bow side it is written "Λ.Σ. 16". Λ.Σ. probably denotes Λιμενικό Σώμα = Port Corps, i.e. Coast Guard.
Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on "16" in Greek sources, regarding her story. But I believe that it is a conversion from a captured Kriegsmarine Pionierlandungsboot (PiLB).

In the third attachment I united the two photos and marked the three characteristics that make me believe that this is an ex PiLB : the clam shell (1) and the bow/stern (2/3) openings for the bitts.
Actually I think it belongs to the PiLB 40 class.

The question is which Pionierlandungsboot this could be.
There were five PiLBs (251, 252, 254, 255, 258) sunk on 4.10.1944 at Tilos and one more (260) sunk on 28/30.10.1944. Also PiLB 263 was scuttled in Salonica on 10.1944. But my chances go to PiLB 253 that escaped on 30.10.1944 from Tilos to Rodos. Was PiLB 253 surrendered in 5.1945 in Rodos? If ye, she could have been handed over by the British to the Greek authorities in 1948. It would make sense that she remained afterwards in Dodecanesse waters and photographed in 1952 in nearby Symi.
Were any other Pionierlandungsboot operating in Greek waters during ww2?

On the following thread there is a mention on PiLB 253
Am 28. Oktober wird ein Angriff von der Kampfgruppe Jenninger (3./VI/999) mit Unterstützung von 3./Landungs-Pionier-Btl 86 (PiLB L-253 u. 260) des Leutnants Biggemann durchgeführt (Kugler, Schenk, Klausch, Kassotis). ------

Hello Dido,

yes, it looks like a PiLaBo. But I don´t have a list of the PiLaBo numbers for the Aegean.

If someone has a list of the German ships that were surrendered in May 1945 in the Dodecanese, we could see if there were candidates for the ship at Symi, meaning if there were any other surrendered Pionerlandungsboots aside from 253.
