14.09.1943At 1730 four minesweepers belonging to the 30th Minesweeper Flotillawere attacked with torpedoes and machine-guns by three low flyingHampdons southwest of Kristiansand South. Machine-gun hits on twoof the minesweepers did no damage. One of the attacking planeswas shot down.
1730 Uhr wurden 4 M-Boote der 30. Msfl. SW-lich Kr`sand Süd durch 3 Hampton im Tiefflug mit Torpedos und Bordwaffen angegriffen. Bordwaffentreffer auf 2 M-Booten verursachten keine Schäden. Ein Angreifer wurde abgeschossen.

Continuing on the patrol coastwise theysighted four flak ships of approx 800 tons. The three aircraft turned into attack andwere immediately subject to intense and very accurate flak from the ships followed byheavy flak from shore batteries.‘Y’ and ‘S’ immediately turned away to starboard violently avoiding the flak. At thesame time ‘N’ was seen to be commencing to turn away between the ships and theshore. ‘S’ and ‘Y’ set course for base and a few seconds later crews of both aircraftobserved a red orange flash from the vicinity of the flak ships, which shot upwardsand then died to a glow, which was almost immediately lost in the fog. This wasbelieved to be ‘N’ which was not seen again.No trace of the missing aircraft or crew was found and the names of the missing creware commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing, Runnymede, Surrey, UK.
