Dank Stuart Smith auf Ships Nostalgia hier ein Bericht über die Beschädigung der "Colabee":
"On 13 March 1942 she was sailing unescorted on passage Puerto Tarafa, Cuba to Baltimore with a cargo of 38,600 bags of sugar. She was under the command of Master Lee Merchant Morgan when at 04.41 hours she was hit by a torpedo from U-126 about 10 miles off Cape Guajaba, Cuba. She was hit on the starboard side at the after-end of No 2 hold.
The explosion created a large hole, blew off No 2 hatch covers and extensively damaged the bridge killing the master and two men also on the bridge. The crew of eight officers and 29 crew members abandoned the ship in panic because they only had two lifeboats and no life rafts. Only ten men got away with one boat, the others jumped overboard of fell into the water when the second boat swamped with the result of many of them drowning.
U-126 picked up one able seaman and helped him into the lifeboat and questioned the men in the boat. The chief engineer had been unable to stop the engines and she ran aground shortly afterwards on a small island of Key Verde, Cuba. The Cuban steamer Oriente picked up 11 survivors on 15 March and took them to Nuevitas. The first engineer and two men stayed with the ship and were taken off the next day. All in all, four officers and 19 men died.
Later Colabee was pulled off the shoal and anchored. On 16 March the Cuban Navy towed her into Nuevitas where she received temporary repairs.
From 20 to 27 April she was towed to Tampa, Florida where she undertook permanent repairs and was returned to service during September 1942."
Danach ist "wurde auf Grund gesetzt" nicht ganz korrekt, sie lief steuerungslos auf Grund, da das Maschinenpersonal die Maschine nicht stoppen konnte.

Danke, Klaus-Günther, ich habe das geändert.
