Is it possible to say if S 47 lay 14(?) Sprengboje in the Baltic at any time?

Hi,

Yes, it is not S 47.

I looked at the details on the Sprengboje boat. It has the big manual winch on the front deck, Winkstan to the left and it is not S 29 (based on the camouflage). It must then be one of S 39 or S 40.

S 39 was in a dock 22-27 June 1941 (in Helsinki or Suomenlinna?) and lay Sprengboje on 19 Aug, 8-9 Sep and 10-11 Sep.
S 40 was in dock 10 Sep. and lay Sprengboje on 19 Aug, 31 Aug and 8-9 Sep.

The dock Flack Waffe cleaning photo is probably from the Sprengboje boat (the tall railing post was still on S 39, S 40 boats). The warm weather points to S 39 in late June.

Most mine laying took place in the dark. Was the laying on 19 Aug, S 39 (or 31 Aug, S 40) daytime operations like in the photo?

I have tried to match the crew. It is not conclusive but looks probable.

Das Legen fand auf einer Breite von ca. 60 Grad Nord statt. Das bedeutet, daß es vermutlich, obwohl mehr als eine Stunde nach Sonnenuntergang, noch Resthelligkeit gab.

Thank Urs,

The conclusion is that all the lot Baltic photos are from S 39. This is also identifying many other S 39 photos and also indirect some from S 40.

It also makes some sense as several of the later lot photos are labeled S 67( Zymalkowskis boat after S 39).

1. S 39
2. S 40

The photos are taken by Kriegsberichter Schwarz. He was with 1 SFtl in the Baltic and also with R-Boote.

Hi,

Back to S 47.
Lt. Stöve left S 56 and got S 47 on 13 June 1941. There is not any Baltic photos of S 47 in the lot. The first one is labeled S 47, Vegesack (Lürssen wharf) September 1941. This is probably correct, S 47 was there 21 Aug-2 Oct 1941. The crew is doing the final painting.

The two other photos are showing S 47 after the crash with S 41 on 20 Nov. 1941. Stöve was wounded at the same time and was replaced by Klose on 1 Dec. 1941.
The text Bremen Vegesack is not correct. S 47 was patched up at the Wilton wharf in Rotterdam and was then towed to Wilhelmshaven on 5 Dec. 1941. Eventually she ended up in the Black sea. Note the other two S-Boot and the R-Boot also being repaired.

Hi,

Yes, and Klose was not with S 47 all the way. He was in Vegesack and picked up his new boat S 70 on 11 Dec 1941.

1. S 70, May, Ijmuidin. The text is probably correct. S 70 had the small maintenance service done by the crew there, 20-31 May.
2. S 70 with Ace of spades Wappen used by Klose (similar to the rest of 2 SFtl) at this date.
3. Text is wrong, probably from a S 56 photo. It is S 70 with Klose on the bridge. His hair looks very different without grease in his hair.
4. S 70, wrong text. I dont know where this is. Looks like some canal. Ijmuiden to Kiel on 26-27 Aug 1942? Weather looks warm.

Hi,

I identified the original album owner. He is on photos from the recruit training, S 56 and S 47 (the Baltic photos are also S 47 not S 39 as I thought) and also on photos showing 8 Sftl in Norway (S 42, S 44, S 45 or S 46). I have not found him on the S 70 photos.

The Norway photos are only said to be from 1942, not witch boat.

1. Boat being towed as number two.
2. Boat as HalbFlottille leader
3. The boat, it is not S 46.
4. Semskefjord with U-boote

Is it possible to guess boat number (S 42, S 44 or S 45) based on photo 1 and 2?

Hi,

Last post on this lot. I think we now has a clearer picture on how the original album owner moved around.

1939/1940 Recruit training at a SStAbt (2or 4?) or 2. MLA Probably in Wihelmshaven or Wesermünde (Pillau Kaserne)
1941 Zandfoort (more training?) and then S 56 in April. S 47 for the rest of the year.
1942 8 Sftl to Norway and back to Holland in April. S 70 with Klose in May.
1943 SchnellbootlehrFlottille
1944 Italy. Lago Magiore (More training?, looks like he is there with army personel.

1. Boat being towed as number two.
From KTB, the #2 boats in tow were S 45 and S 46, Datum 26.11.1941

Great, thank you Urs,

The boat in the Norway photos is then probably S 45.

Hi,

There is a different lot showing Priebe with S 46 in Norway (8 SFtl, 1941/42). Some of the photos shows a man on the boat in civilian clothes. I have difficulties in reading the text. Can anyone help?

Is the man an Unteroffiz.? He has always civilian clothes on all photos.
