Yes Urs,

Lets have a look where the last Lürssen boats went.

I am sure that the last Lürssen boats were towed to the Henry Rasmussen warf in Svendborg, Denmark. The unfinished boats were then sunk in the Lunkebugt when all Schnellboote were ordered to the Geltinger bucht on 6 May 1945.

Some of the boat wrecks have been found (4-5 boats) and two other wrecks were reported to have been blown up after the war. The wrecks are without motors and were loaded with spare parts (propellers, radiators etc). This fits well with all the sources regarding the Lürssen production.

A danish newspaper article from 1945 descrips how 8 boats were sunk on 6 May. Four operational boats were left. (10 S-Ftl?)

I think there are two possible senarios. I will stick to this one:
Lürssen launched S 307-S 318. S 307 was left in Vegesack to be compleated. The boats were towed by 10 S-Ftl etc on the 13 April (4 boats) and 16 April(6 boats) and lost at least S 316 on the way to Svendborg. All remaining boats (8-10 boats) were sunk in the Lunkebugt on 6 May.

The alternative is that only 7 boats were launched, one lost in transfer and that two unfinished boats from Schlichting warf were added before the 8 boats were sunk in the Lunkebugt.

I guess it can all be found here. Expensive thou!

Hi,

Lets now have a look what happened to the last Schlichting boats. The last boat delivered was S 228. There were suposed to have been four more boats launched, S 229-S 232.  Link: http://www.foerderverein-museums-schnellboot.de/s-boote/kriegsmarine/geheimnis-4-boote.htm
I assume that when they say compleat = everything except the motors.

Also on this forum: http://www.forum-marinearchiv.de/smf/index.php/topic,12101.msg134239.html#msg134239

The information from Theo and Andreas:
There was a convoy from Travemünde to Sönderborg (where the unfinished Lürssen boats were) on 3 May 1945 (~the day the British got to Lübeck). The boats were Wohnboot 4, Kümo Amstel 12, S 170 and S 226. They were towing two Transportschuten (S 231, S 232 probebly without Kalotte?) and Neubaurumpf (S 229, S 230?). The convoy were attacked from the air with bombs etc., all boats were sunk.

I think both S 170 and S 226 were 1 S-Ftl at this date. I also think that they were at the Sclichting warf when the British got and that they left with what ever that was floating.

Was it possible for one Schnellboot to towe two others?

moin,

Hi Urs,

I think most sites says that there were 7 or 8 boats sunk. Four wrecks are found and there is rumors of a number 5 somewhere. There is also the information that two wrecks were destroyed after the war.

Link: http://dyk.dk/?q=artikel/motortorpedob%C3%A5dene-lunkebugten-%E2%80%93-vragleksikon-32

It is only the four wrecks that are hard evidence.

Parts from one boat have been raised to make spare parts for the S 130 restauration (whenever it will start again). Link (galeri 2): http://www.rovcom.co.uk/s130_restoration_preparation_dismantling-1.htm

Hi,

I found this film when I was looking for the Schnellboote in Lunkebugt.
Link 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11VojpwpDPE
Link 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0eDS1F6lck
Link 3 (S 216): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaV6vwfup1k

It must be a very early (1948?) film from the danish navy. It is showing a number of old german Schnellboote.

To start with:

T 54 = S 133
T 55 = S 206
T 56 = S 127
T 57 = S 305
T 59 = S 197

There is a lot of other things to see as well, Norwegian Dog boats etc.

Hi

I have been trying to find the RAF Squadron that made the attack on S 170 and S 226. Not easy! There was a lot of action on the 3 May with the sinking of Cap Arcona and Deutschland as the largest incidents.

I have found a 198 Squadron report that says they saw a tug with barges that they did not attack. I do not understand the way they report possitions: "Oboe 0819" Do anyone know how to translate it?

Quadranten (000-090) liegen.

yes Urs :-D

Your explanation makes perfect sence. I thought that "Oboe" had something to do with the RAF Bomber Command navigation system used over Germany with the same name.

I have tryed to find the correct cordinates for the big ships and drawn the "Oboe" lines from Niendorf. The cordinates are not fully correct (to far north, Deutschland on dry land!). The angels seams correct.

Oboe 0114(0)  = Cap arcona        54°3'9"N 10°50'45"E
Oboe 0112       = Thielbek            54°4'3"N 10°50'40"E
Oboe 0007       = Deutschland      54°7'5"N 10°48'25"E
Oboe 0819       = Tug and barges

The Tug and barges were heading east and it does not look like it could be S 226 etc.

Than you Urs.

Hallo Alo,

Very intresting Beate, :-)

I have bought a number of the RAF squadron reports for May 1945. I think I have found the sinking of S 226 and S 170 in the 193 Squadron (Typhoon) report. Link: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/raf-operations-record-books.htm

3 May 1945, 18:30-20:15
"...One MTB was found 10 miles SE of Fehmar and was attacked with cannon. It stoped and the crew abandoned ship...."
This was probebly S 170.

4 May 1945, 08:45-10:15
"..One MTB moving north at D3136 was straffed and damaged..."
This was probebly S 226. The translation of "D3136" gives the same coordinates as given in Hümmelchen for the sinking of S 226 (54°20'N 11°18'O, East of Fehmar).

I think it also proves that the Schnellboote did not tow any boat hulls when they were sunk.

The Schnellboot wreck south of Lolland is then not S 226. Link: http://www.bubblewatcher.de/bericht_Schnellboot%20S%20226_64_Wracks.html
