I think the photo shows S 190 that also had the dimond bar marking. There is one more photo of S 190 under the "Schnellboote, photo no. 7" head line. There are a few S 67 photos with both plastic and steel Kalotte.

4. Das angebliche "S 118" mit Wappen der 2. SFltl gehörte "nur" 14 Tage (17.- 30.11.42) zu dieser Flottille ..
I think this is S 104 with Roeders marking ~1942. It is an earlier boat then S 118, note the winche on the front deck.

Yes it must be S 193 Schuur photographed from S 194.

I do not agree. I would say that it is S 109 with the top of the forcastell removed.

The crew 36 commanders with Schlichting boats I could find were: S 104 Pribe, S 112 Müller, S 113 Schneebel, S 110 Graser, S 120 Graser and S 132 Witt. Are there more? I think S 132 Witt is the moste probeble.

Hi Urs,

I think that the mirror images are playing you a trick with S 109. For example, photo 2/32 and 32/32 are wrong. The kitchen chimeny to the left on 32/32 proves that. The photo 10/32 shows the panther on the correct side, the side that can not be seen on the Ijmudin photo.

I have two main ideas about the crew 36 boat.

1. It is S 132 Witt in Sep. 1944 when 6 S-Ftl handed over thire old boats. The "12" boat is then S 122 with the marking of 2 S-SchulFtl.
Pro: Schlichting boat, "12" is a 2 S-SchulFtl marking, Con: Only promoted to crew 36, Kalotte looks earlier, should have 6 S-Ftl "W" marking in 1944.

2. It is S 100 Kolbe. Hümmelchen is a bit unclear if S 100 was damaged during the air attack on the 5 S-Ftl on 11 Aug. 1943 at L'Abervrach. He writes that two boats had to be repaired at a warf in Germany and later that S 100 returned to the 5 S-Ftl with S 138 and S 140 on 24 Aug 1943 (page 147). The "12" boat is then probebly one of S 124-126 that were being transfered to Spain.
Pro: early Kalotte boat, 5 S-Ftl did not have marking, Con: Why "12"?, did S 100 go to the Schlichting warf?

I have shown these photos before. I thought the boat was S 135 (the next Kalotte boat after S 100 from Lürssen). It could also be S 100 testing a radar deflecting Kalotte. It is in Travemünde.

hi,

I now think I know the identity of the boats.

Crew 36 Kalotte boat = S 100 (the first Kalotte boat built)
Strange Kalotte boat = S 135 (the second Kalotte boat built)

Both boats were built without the full wind screen that can be seen on all later boats. I am sure that the photos shows diffrent tests made to the Kalotte to keep the spray away. The outcome of the tests were the wind screen that was then mounted on all boats.

S 100:
ID 5/5-43 Lürssen, Vegesack
N.V.K tests untill 15/8-43 (including radar tests on the new Kalotte)

S 135
ID 29/5-43 Lürssen, Vegesack
Bomb damage in Kiel 29/7-43
Repared Schlichting, Travemünde
N.V.K. tests?

The "12" boat is then probebly S 123 with the S-SchulFtl. They must then have used numbers as marking before the 2 S-SchulFtl started in Dec. 1943.

Thank you Urs and Andreas

D. "TAURI" beschossen. S 123 erhielt Treffer in der Back.

Hi,

I found it in Hümmelchen page 146.
S 137 was damaged badly at the same time and was later scraped in Vegesack. There were several photos showing the damage on S 135 at the Schlichting warf. The conclusion that it is S 135 is based on the Lürssen name plate, the damaged boat in Kiel and the very early look of the boat.

I also found a type S 38 boat with the crew 36 rings. It is probebly Kolbe's first boat S 85. It has a large front light so it is probely still training in the Baltic? The photo was marked as S 100 (clearly wrong), possible mix up with Kolbe's next boat?

I only know of two other commanders that used the crew wappen. KptLt Karcher S 188 and KptLt Wiencke S 202 both crew 37a and the 4 S-Ftl. Are there more?

Hi,
I am back with the DirK boat again.

Zitat von: alo41 am 19 Oktober 2012, 23:38:52
A 8 S-Ftl typ S 38b boat with a Naxos radar detector in Ostende limits the boats to:

S 64 LtzS Erich Kehder
S 67 ObltzS Horst Schuur (HS)
S 83 Kplt Walter Knapp (WK)
S 85 ObltzS Ulrich Toermer
S 87 ObltzS Günter Rathenow
S 117 LtzS Wulff Fanger (WF)

They were all in Ostende 17-31 May 1944 and S 83, S 117 were there again 8-23 June.
Photos are know of the Walter, Horst and Wulff markings making the "Dirk" boat probebly one of S 64, S 85 or S 87.

Andreas ID of S 64 next to DirK gives the choise of S 85 or S 87. S 87 was in the same half Flottille and also normaly in the Rotte of S 64. This points to S 87 and Günther Rathenow.
Günther was the new man in the Flottille and joined with S 87 in Feb. 1944. All the others had been with the Flottille for years. He was also only a reserv officer. S 87 came from Karcher, 4 S-Ftl with the KeK and Crew 37a daggers marking. A naval dagger in English is a Dirk and english nick names were used.  Link:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk

I am sure that they repainted S 87 when she went from 4 S-Ftl to the 8 S-Ftl. They then named the boat after the crew 37a wappen on her (they might not have had Günters name yet at the time).

S 87 were sunk already on 20 May and she came to Ostende on 17 May 1944.

It is just a name, the crew 37a meaning is not intended. The daggers were probebly the thing that made the new boat diffrent and they might have refered to it as the dagger boat.
Außerdem fehlt (mir) eine Erklärung für die unterschiedliche Größe der Buchstaben in DirKThe "normal way" for 8 S-Ftl was a first name on the Kalotte and the initials aft. Example: S 133, Achim on the Kalotte, AQ aft. The 4 S-Ftl had only the first name/nick name on the Kalotte. KeK was a nick name, the other boats did not include a reference to the family name. I think the large "K" is a rest of the original "KeK" marking

No, both S 127 and S 133 were built with type S 100 Kalotte

The other thing is that there is not many alternatives.
Most of the other boats are know.
S 67 Horst, S 83 Walter, S 117 Wulff, S 127 Jasper and S 133 Achim.

That leaves:
S 64 Erich Kehder (the boat next to Dirk)
S 85 Ulrich Toermer (he and the boat with 8 S-Ftl since ~Oct. 1943)
And S 87 OLt dR Günther Rathenov

S 87 has convinced me.

Hallo Urs,
