Helgoland / Heligoland, June 2011

Helgoland / Heligoland

Zitat
(German: Helgoland; Heligolandic: deät Lun ["the Land"]) is a small German archipelago in the North Sea.
Formerly Danish and British possessions, the islands (population 1,650) are located in the Heligoland Bight (part of the German Bight) in the south-eastern corner of the North Sea. They are the only German islands not in the immediate vicinity of the mainland and are approximately three hours sailing time from Cuxhaven at the mouth of the River Elbe. In addition to German, the local population, who are ethnic Frisians, speak the Heligolandic dialect of the North Frisian language called Halunder. Heligoland was formerly called Heyligeland, or "holy land," possibly due to the island's long association with the god Forseti.

- The ferry-boat to Helgoland - arriving in the Cuxhaven harbour - to take us to  the island. The one way trip takes appr. 70 minutes.
- The arrival in the south harbour.

- Some street views

- Hummerbuden / Lobster Shacks
Zitat
The street leads along the harbour. Here are moored fishing boats and small cargo Börteboote. On the other side of the street are brightly painted wooden booths lined up in formation, the so-called lobster shacks. Previously they served only as a storage and tool shed for the fishermen, but since tourism is a lucrative business, we now find many shops and restaurants on the gayest mile Heligolands.
There are maritime craft objects and small gifts made of wood and clay to buy. Next door, meanwhile, the day trippers from Wuppertal bite in sandwiches made with herring or crab. The civil registry of the island is located in one of the lobster shacks, while the wedding ceremonies are held in the Bude 38th

- More street views, lower level.

- The corner restaurant is called "Bunte Kuh" / Colourful Cow"; one can of course understand why - since the whole place is so colourful  :wink: and is renown for its "maritime Gastronomie".

-A street in the village below.

- One of the sailors' houses (the former inhabitants were mostly sailors). Remark the beautiful tiles near the door (similar to the Portuguese / Dutch ones);
- At the street end are the cruise ships waiting in the harbour;
- Der Nordosthafen / The North-East harbour;

- Many tourists are with the cruise ships - or for a day trip - or for a week. The island is tax-free, so everybody loads on some scotch / perfume / whatever;

- The Maritime Museum
Zitat

- In the museum yard there is a original "Badekarre" / "Bathing Machine";

The village on the cliff above. This being Helgoland - the village church has a ship instead of the cross on the spire ...

BUNTE KUH was the name of the ship who brought Mr. Stoertebeker - a German pirat - from Helgoland were he was captured to Hamburg. He later lost his life by behaed.

The new After the battle edition, no 154, is about Helgoland.

Sad to see almost nothing of all the WW1 & 2 constructions survives.

Kind regards,

Maurice
