Griechischer Dampfer AGIA MARINA




Hallo zusammen !


In meinen Verlustlisten 1941 habe ich den Dampfer AGIA MARINA welcher im April 1941 deutsche Prise in griechischen Gewässern geworden sein soll.


Größe wird mit  667 BRT angegeben und das Baujahr mit 1906.


Bisher konnte ich zum Vorgang und zum Schiff keine weiteren Infos finden.

Im Gröner, Taschenbuch der Handelsflotten, findet sich eine "Agia Marina" von 667 BRT, die allerdings 1902 gebaut worden sein soll. Heimathafen Piräus, Rufzeichen SZHB.

Nach Miramar Ship Index gebaut von Williamson (Nau Nr.181) als "Seagull" für Shoreham Shipping Co.Ltd.
1911 an Goole & Hull Steam Towing Co Ltd.
1922 an Galleon Sg Co Ltd.
1934 "Agia Marina", Panos N.Koletsis & Georges M.Katzourakis.
1939 an A.N.Valsamakis & V.Alexatos
1939 "Georgos", G.Ch.Vlassis
28.05.41 + ac/b Candia, Crete
Deutsche Prise erscheint daher für April 1941 unwahrscheinlich,möglicherweise wurde aber das Wracknoch als Prise angesehen (oder sogar gehoben??)

Mit Baujahr 1902 fand ich auch die richtigen Daten.

Dimitri hat noch ein anderes Verlustdatum und ich glaube ihn bei seinen genauen Daten mehr wie Lloyds

So wird es sich bi Prise wohl nur um das Wrack handeln.

Vorm Prisenhof Berlin ist das Schiff nicht verhandelt worde.

Bergungsdaten hab ich auch nicht, wichig ist eben nur das wir wieder einen Schritt weiter sind.

Vielleicht stand der alte Schiffsname von 1939 ja noch am Schiff und wurde irgendwo als tatsächliche Name vermerkt.

Das ist eine andere AGIA MARINA Thomas und zwar ein Caique, also ein Motorsegler.

Im Bericht Vidua steht ganz genau beschrieben wie die zwei Motorsegler (hölzerne Schiffe), BESSARION und AGIA MARINA, unter dem Kommando Österlins, dt. Truppen im April 1941 nach Milos transportierten. Die gleichen Informationen stehen auch im Schenks Buch ,,Kampf um die Ägäis". Das Schiff, was Theo meint, war ein eiserne Frachter Namens AGIA MARINA von 658 BRT (s. Miramar).
Meines Achtens wurde die eiserne AGIA MARINA von Fliegerbomben im Hafen von Heraklion (Kreta) im April 1941 versenkt. Ich werde in den nächsten Tagen den Dampfer unter die Lupe nehmen.

The date of sinking of GEORGOS is a matter of controversy between Greek sources, while her name was sometimes mispelled as GEORGIOS which confused the researchers.

Admiral Dounis mentions in his book "Ναυάγια στις ελληνικές θάλασσες 1900-1950" that GEORGIOS (ex AGIA MARINA, SEAGULL), registered in Piraeus (No 747) was sunk in Suda on 25.5.41, as it is transcribed at her HMA page at http://www.historisches-marinearchiv.de/projekte/verluste_griechenland/ausgabe.php?lang=1&rubrik=%&where_value=260 :

25.05.41 der gr. Dampfer GEORGOS unter dem Kommando des Kapitäns Emmanuel Moschakis und mit vierköpfige Besatzung, befand sich in der Souda-Bucht, Insel Kreta, Griechenland, als er von der dt. Luftwaffe, VIII. Fliegerkorps (Gen.d.Fl. von Richthofen), angegriffen und versenkt wurde. Keine Verluste.

However when GEORGOS was deleted from Piraeus Register (No 747) in 1946 it is noted that she was sunk on 25.5.41 by air attack at...Heraklion.
But in E. Babouris' book "Το ελληνικόν εμπορικόν ναυτικόν κατά τον πόλεμον"  it is mentioned that she sunk on 6.4.41 in Piraeus due to the German air attack. Lt Commander Ι. Melissinos' archive, published in the book "Το Ναυτικό στον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο" is mentioned that the 667-grt GEORGOS was sunk between 4-6.4.41 in Piraeus by air attack.
Admiral Κ. Paizis-Paradelis mentions in his book "Το τίμημα του πολέμου" all three versions regarding GEORGIOS (Reg No 747) location of sinking.
However, the GEORGIOS that was sunk in Piraeus was a different ship that was actually named GEORGIOS and not GEORGOS.

In this document http://historisches-marinearchiv.de/ablage/dokumente/VG_Leros_SZIC_Dok2.jpg the 667-grt GEORGOS is mentioned as sunk on 28.5.41 in Heraklion. Jean-Luis Roba also mentions GEORGOS as sunk by Axis aircraft in Heraklion in his book "Les Allemands en Egee 1941-1945".
Also in this http://historisches-marinearchiv.de/ablage/dokumente/VG_EVANGELISTRIA_SYBN_Dok2.jpg document from October 1941 the wreck of the 797-grt "GEORGIA" is positioned in Heraklion.

From all the above, it is evident that GEORGOS was sunk in Heraklion, not in Suda. The exact date 25 or 28.5 remains unclear.

In the second attached photo, the forward mast of the inner wreck is missing (also the tug IRINI VERNICOU is also visible in the background) meaning that it was taken second.
Four steamers are know that were sunk in Heraklion during 4-5/41: LEROS, ELENI, EVANGELLISTRIA and GEORGIOS. As most of them are under the water it is difficult to identify them. However, it is certain that none of them is the EVANGELLISTRIA which was grounded and had a different lay out. Lloyd's mention that GEORGIOS was a "well deck, machinery aft" steamer. Her builders, R. Williamson & Son, provided two more ships with identical dimensions (55.7 x 8.5 m), PYLADES and RAVONIA. Attached are two photos (from the Royal Greenwhich Museum collection) of RAVONIA aground which provide a good benchmark. To me it seems that the inner wreck with the engines-aft is definitely GEORGIOS.
LEROS was as an ex-Black Sea "Elpidifor" type ship which should also had her engines and accommodation aft. So that leaves a question to which might be the second wreck with the mid-ship accommodation. It seems to me that the second wreck can't be ELENI as the aft mast is too far from the funnel to fit in the space that the ex-whaler had between her funnel and stern. I can only assume that the second wreck was sunk after 5.1941, maybe while employed in removing GEORGIOS of a possible cargo?

The wreck of GEORGOS was not salvaged until after the war.
In 1946 the crews of the Wreck Salvage Association (Ο.Α.Ν.) work underwater to cut the keels from two wrecks in Heraklion which were recorded to belong to GEORGIOS and LEROS (which must be a mistake as LEROS is believed to have been taken to Piraeus for conversion to a Netzleger which was not completed but sunk there in 1944).
In Lt Cdr Melissinos' archive the wreck of the 300-tons steamship AG. GEORGIOS is also mentioned as salvaged in Heraklion.
