Ich suche mein Grossvater. Ich habe leider kein Name oder Feltpostnummer, nur ein Bild.

Ich suche ein liste von Fähnrich zur See. Ich weiss dass er Fähnrich zur See in Dezember 1944 war. Dafür glaube ich das er von Crew X/1943 kam.

I am looking for my Grandfather. I have no name or feltpostnummer, only a picture.

I am looking for a list of Fähnrich zur See from Dezember 1944. I know that he was Fähnrich zur See in Dezember 1944. Therefore I think he was from Crew X/43. As far as I have been able to find out it took one year to be promoted to Fähnrich zur See and then a few months (at the end of the war) before promotion to Ober Fähnrich zur See.

There can´t have been that many Fähnrich zur See in Dezember 1944. I know he was in Aarhus, Denmark in Dezember, and I have a list of wessels from Aarhus harbour.

The reason I am looking for a name-list is that my mother once was told the name, but she forgot it. Maybe, if she hears it again, she will remember.

Welcome to the Forum – and let me start with an apology:
It is really not our habit letting kind requests without any answer; alas – it is not an easy quest you are on!

Some few thoughts about your search:

As for the Crew in question:
Towards the end of the war the Crews follow in quick succession with three Crews both in 1942 and 1943. Looking at a promotion list leaves several Crews that would have reached Faehnrich but not yet Oberfaehnrich in December 1944.
That is:
Crew XII/42: promoted Faehnrich in 12.1943 – promoted Oberfaehnrich in 12.1944
(I admit this one fits only just but who knows)
Crew IV/43: promoted Faehnrich in 4.1944 – promoted Oberfaehnrich in 4.45
Crew VII/43: promoted Faehnrich between 7. and 9.1944
Crew X/43: promoted Faehnrich between 10. and 12.1944

As for Crew numbers; as far as I know (excluding Engineers, Admin and Medics):
Crew XII/42: 830, Crew IV/43: 300, Crew VII/43: 1050, Crew X/43: 1200

Quite a list there! About 3000 men. While most of the earlier Crews developed a lively connection, issuing Crew newspapers and address lists on a regular basis the later Crews never had time to form such bonds. I have an address list of Crew XII/42 from 1955. That one I can of cause copy or scan for you. But as I wrote that Crew only just fits the search pattern.
I sadly do not know of any listings or even Crewbooks of either Crews IV/43 and VII/43 (though my knowledge of Crew papers is far from complete!). As for the Crew X/43 you've probably now had a good look at their very fine Crewbook. But that sadly does not come with a list of the Crew and I am not aware of any list in existence.

Where to look?

You might want to try to find a Crew list or an address book of one of the Crews in question. The two best places to get further with your search are:

Marineschule Muerwik, Wehrgeschichtliches Ausbildungszentrum. I know the library there does not have a list of either Crew but I am not certain about the WGAZ. Well worth a try! Write to:

Quite a nice and helpful bunch there! You can write in English or German, just what you feel more at home with. In fact I think they have enough locals from Flensburg as even to cope with Danish.

An even better chance you might have at the Marine Offizier Vereinigung. Firstly they have a well sorted library as well. That might yield a list of a Crew or two. And normally every Crew has a 'Crewbetreuer'; often someone out of their own ranks but sometimes an external. That person's job is keeping lists up to date, receiving letters on behalf of the Crew, quite a kind of Crew secretary. You would have a good chance to get further with your quest if you could find addresses of the Crewbetreuer of XII/42, IV/43, VII/43 and X/43. The Marine Offizier Vereinigung might have those names and addresses.

Here I would write in German. Your German is in fact well up to the task! And as far as I know they do not have any professional secretarial staff there. All the work is done by volunteers and you might make their work easier by not adding an extra language hurdle. Nice and friendly staff but all volunteers – you might have to give some time there.

In both cases I would trust my luck in good old fashioned paper letters rather than e-mail. E-mails tend to drop down in the inbox list and fade into oblivion while a paper letter – even if not easy to answer – tends to pop up every time the desk is cleared. Also in my experience people tend to think that someone who goes through all the effort licking a stamp really wants an answer!
It might be useful to print out one or two of the old photographs of your granddad and add them to the letter. There might just be a photograph of a course or a Kompanie available in Flensburg or Bonn to compare faces. And again – a picture just adds a personal touch and give an I-really-want-an-answer-message.

I am sorry that I do not have any more for you than daunting numbers. Let me know if you need the list of Crew XII/42. As for Crew Betreuer – I shall have a look through the yellow pages of old issues of Marine Forum (the Newspaper the Marine Offizier Vereinigung is associated with now). But since I only have few years it would be very lucky to find the Crew Betreuer of either of the Crews in question mentioned – but then – who knows.

There exists a 'Nachtrag' to the Crewbook of Crew X/43, issued in 2001
I do not know if that one contains a Crew list. I think the library of the Marineschule Muerwik has a copy. Well worth asking when you write to the guys in Flensburg. Failing that I am sure the library of the Militaergeschichtliches Forschungsamt has a copy (library number: MGFA 39,550.Nachtrag).

First of all, thanks for the detailed list of promotions, that is the best I have seen yet. When I wrote, that there can't be that many men with that rank, I did realise that it was quite a few. But, 3000 is a lot better than nothing.
I have a list of the wessels that was in Aarhus harbour at the time. Since he had the Kriegsabzeichen für Minensuch-, U-Boots-, Jagd- und Sicherungsverbände he might have been on one of the Minesweepers. Looking at crew lists would probably have been easier, but I don't have those (as well).

A few news

I am now quite sure that the Grandfather was from Crew VII/43 or maybe Crew IV/43

That mens that there are only 1350 people to consider! He was not among the people in Memellager (no more than 80 people: Waffen Offiziere). He must have been among the people in Mürwik (ca. 400 people from Crew VII/43) or Glücksburg (ca. 500 people from Crew VII/43).

He might have been Reserve Offizier as they were recruited in rising numbers towards the end of the war.

Further it can be deduced from his uniform that he was not a Ingenieur or a Doktor.

This leaves even fewer people.

Can anybody inform me on the whereabouts of Crewlists??

Thank you for your ansver. I can now exclude some more people from my list, as I know that he didn´t die during the war.

What I really could use now is a list of Crewmembers from these Crews. I guess I have to go to the Marinen Museum in Germany

I have been to Marineschule Muerwik, at the museum there. They have pictures of all the crews, but no names attatched to the pictures. Further they have hardly any information about these two Crews.
