I believe I have a Gefechtsbericht (from Theo), describing the loss of this vessel, somewhere on my computer. If I remember correctly, the number of casualties (1100) is vastly exaggerated.

Hello Jan-Olof,

The attack by TORBAY on PALMA occurred actually at 0801/27.11.1943 (the time used by the submarine was -2, which was I think one hour ahead of Axis local forces). AFAIK there were 255 on board and 173 were picked up but two died later so that 84 were either killed or drowned.

Best regards,

Platon

I think the sinking date of VOLGA DON is 25.11.43 and not 26.11.43. The position given in German sources is 45°07.2' N/33°08.5' E but the longitude is obviously an error and the Soviet sources which give 45°07 N/32°08 E are probably more accurate. The name I have is WOLGA DON and she was being escorted by STIHI, DUMITRESCU, UJ.2301, UJ.2309 and R.205 when she was struck in the stern by a torpedo from L 6, she sank in 26 meters of water. Best regards, Platon

1917 Laid down as ELPIDIOFOR No. 423 (Russian Navy)
1923 Launched as VOLGA-DON
1929 Completed as VOLGA-DON (STF-AGK) rebuilt as tanker in Odessa
1934 VOLGA-DON (AGMP) 15.03.34
1941 VOLGA-DON (ChABU) 01.07.41
1941 Scuttled by explosion in Mariupol 08.10.41
1941 Wreck seized by Germans 03.12.41
1942 Salvaged by Germans
1943 Torpedoed by Soviet submarine L-6 45.10N-33.06E off Tarkhankut Pt. 25.11.43
1943 Taken under tow; tow cable parted and ship sank 26.11.43
That's what I have. Marty

According to Morozov the attack took place in fact on 25.XI.1943 at 19:07 in position 45°07 N/32°18 E. L 6 fired 4 torpedos from distant of 3 cables, and after 23 and 31 two explosions were heard. Volga Don [956 GRT] was heavily damaged and was sunk in fact next day at 11:35 3 Nm S from Evpatorija Cape. During the attack 5 men were killed and 2 were wounded. Best wishes, crolick

Hallo Thomas,

21.11.1943  01:30 Torbay   14sm N Skyros
21.11.1943  10:15 Torbay   CHI 87 = Panagia 29 BRT + 39.30n 24.10e

19.11.43
1015 surfaced in position ten miles 325º from Psathura and fired fourteen rounds at 50 ton schooner rigged caique which came out of Iura channel steering north. Most of the shots hit and seemed to go through without bursting. Crew of four took to their boat which was towing astern. Went alongside expecting to be able to collect charts etc and to have to set fire to the vessel as she was not heavily laden. However the party was hardly aboard before they had to get off as she (meine Notiz Kyrapanaja Chi 87) sank like a stone as soon as we secured alongside.
21.11.43
sank a 50 ton caique (?) by gunfire off Psathura, another caique being directed to pick up the survivors

In Ordnung Thomas,

18.11.43
02.11 ordered patrol Saloniki area, set course south of Strati and proceeded towards Saloniki area on surface.
06.50 in position 39º27N 25º11E sighted one small caique steering NW.
07.00 caique was ordered alongside and found to be carrying a cargo of olive oil and soap to Saloniki from Mitylene. This caique was flying the usual Greek ensign with German commandeer pendant inferior.
Crew ordered on board and sank caique by gunfire, [meine Bemerkung:My 662 CANELLOS, 20 BRT]
