Hi,

I ask for help. I want to find out the details of the attempted breakthrough of the Coronel raider in February 1943.
Information at http://www.bismarck-class.dk/hilfskreuzer/coronel.html
... As a result, five Hunt-class destroyers and six Motor Torpedo Boats that had been sent to intercept her, failed to locate her.
... Although further attacked by eight British MTBs and MGBs which were successfully driven off by her escort, she arrived safely back in Cuxhaven on February 28.
I can not confirm the actions of the British MTB with German or English documents. I do not know what German ships were guarded by the raider. If there is information, I will be very grateful.

Hello Cam,
All I could find out about the escort of CORONEL is that she was guarded by 12 motor minesweepers of 8. R-Flotilla and on her way back from Boulogne to Dunkirk by V 1511 and 1513. (Chronik des Seekriegs 1939-1945) Brennecke, die deutschen Hilfskreuzer im Zweiten Weltkrie,g mentions an attack of MTB which the ship could "avoid".
Best regards
Peter

Kapitän zur See Ernst-Ludwig Thienemann, Protagonist des Hilfskreuzereinsatzes, April 1944 bis April 1945 letzter Kommandant der Admiral Scheer und ab 1956 Flottillenadmiral der Bundesmarine, stellte die Coronel im Januar 1943 als Hilfskreuzer in Dienst.
