Hallo,

WEST-HINDER, reserve light boat, leaves Ostend on 18.5.1940 in the LOODSBOOT 12 trailer.
27.5.1940 sunk by the Germans in the port of Cherbourg
Reported by the Germans. Become?

The fireboat WEST-HINDER, devoid of any propulsion system, was towed by LOODSBOOT N°12. These two ships reached Dieppe and Ouistreham on 21 May. Once in the port of Normandy, the French maritime authorities forbade the pilot to continue on his way with his trailer. The WEST-HINDER did not start again until ten days later. On 31 May, the Belgian tug ZEELEEUW finally took the Ouistreham fireboat to the port of Cherbourg. The WEST-HINDER stays there for almost a month. Finally, he is caught up by the threat he tried to escape from his home port. The German invasion was so rapid that the Norman port was about to fall into the hands of the armies of the 3rd Reich. Then, on 18 June, the Belgian fleet was ordered to drop anchor as soon as possible. LOODSBOOT No. 7,11 and 12 as well as TENDER No. 6 and 8 must remain docked due to lack of fuel. The other ships headed for the great harbour. The master of LOODSBOOT N°18 orders TENDER N°2 to take the WEST-HINDER in tow. Despite several attempts, the tender failed to pass the trailer. It is just as likely to run aground during manoeuvres. Order is then given to take the crew of the fireboat aboard TENDER N°2. The whole convoy resumes its journey to Brest.
Faced with the inevitable defeat, the French Navy ordered the destruction of the infrastructure of the military port of Cherbourg. The WEST-HINDER, which is based within the arsenal, is being mined on site.

The Belgian fireboat was subsequently refloated by the German authorities. After that, his trace is lost in the archives. But the presence of this ship at Cherbourg in 1940 may make us suggest that the wreck of the Omonville fireboat is the WEST-HINDER. Measurements and observations carried out on site confirm that the carcass is that of an identical vessel. Moreover, the proximity of the site of the attack on the BALIDAR convoy leads us to believe that the identity of the wreck is probably that of the Belgian fireboat. In August 2015, during a conversation with an underwater archaeologist, the latter confided that he had been in contact with a BALIDAR sailor on board on the day of his shipwreck, confirming the presence of a fireboat in a trailer.

The circumstances of its sinking are described in the BALIDAR data sheet.

In the early afternoon of 14 September 1943, the light south-south-east sector breeze off Landemer did not interfere with the slow advance of a convoy heading west. This was the tug BALIDAR towing the fireboat WEST-HINDER at a speed of five knots. In order to protect them from a possible Allied attack, the authorities have added two escort boats from the port defence fleets of Cherbourg and Boulogne: the FBO 06 and FC 02, each of which is at one end of the convoy.

That same day, RNZAF's 486 Squadron was ordered to patrol the western Channel. After having flew over the peninsula from Barfleur and then joined the Anglos Normandes, the Squadron Leader DJ Scott ordered his pilots to join Cherbourg via the Cap de la Hague. The encounter with the German convoy was inevitable.

The squadron composed of twelve Typhoon will be divided into sections of four planes in order to operate three successive passages on the convoy. But at the coast, the 486 Squadron is already spotted and will soon face an intense Flak dam. Added to this is the modest firepower of the convoy's escort. It doesn't stop the Squadron from literally melting on all four boats. A single pass of each section is enough to mortally wound all units of the Kriegsmarine. Two of them sink very quickly: the WEST-HINDER and one of the two Hafenschutzflottille-boot. The other escort ship will drift westward for a moment to ground under Gréville. The BALIDAR, which was hit on the port stern, sank after drifting more than one mile to the northwest.
