Hallo

was stimmt?

Sorry for writing in english, but I hope you'll find this useful anyway:

Some findings from PG22838h (report from Lt Hans Müller of "4th Molch Flotilla" dated 29/11-1944) and PG22838i (a report from Lt Hans-Jürgen Henicke of "6th Molch Flotilla, dated 30/12-1944):
Tests from "Molch" was for the most part successful, but further tests are recommended.
It's considered most useful to use the TX torpedo from midget submarines with a dome-type cupola (like Molch/Marder/Seehund) as using a periscope does not offer satisfactory visibility (my note: The TX required manual steering based on visual tracking of the lamp on the tail). Successful guiding from Molch was achived up to 2000m distance in daylight.
During tests, the guiding cable kept tangling up in the propeller of the submarine. It was recommended to install a roll of cable to be fed from the submarine (my note: During development of the TX torpedo, it was tested by using two cable reels: One in the torpedo, and one on the launch-barge - 5000m each. For operational use, only the 5000m reel in the torpedo was used).
It's noted that the use of TX-torpedoes by submarines increases the ability for the enemy to estimate the submarines location (the tail-lamp of the torpedo would be visible from the enemy at about 200m distance).

Ditto from PG22838k (a report from 5 night-testshots of TX torpedo on Seehund midget submarine on 19/1-1945, and one from 6 shots on 3/2-1945. The reports are dated 8/2-1945):
Similar findings from the Molch-tests, and the TX is considered a suitable torpedo for the Seehund, although further test has to be carried out.
It's recommended to adapt the current tactic: Firing direct at target, with only minor course-adjustments.

The P22838-reports contains more details and even though I can't find them among my papers now, I believe they also included diagrams of data-records from the test-shots.
It appears that different types of TX-torpedoes was tested, only the 43cp mentioned specifically (note: The TX torpedo was designated "gerät 43" with versions including the 43a, 43c, 43d and 43cp (the 43d was the variant actually manufactured for use on the land-batteries).

"Conclusion": Although the testreports from february 1945 indicates potential success of using TX torpedoes from midget submarines, there were still challenges of both technical and tactical nature wich demanded further development and testing. I think it's impossible that the torpedo was ever was ready for operational use with submarines before the end of the war.

You will find more reports and information on the TX torpedo and the "Spinne-batterien" here:

Hello Natter,
great work  :MG: top,
now I find the information from Seehundfahrer Hellmuth Bahlmann
http://uk-muenchen.de/pdfBerichte/seehundBahlmann.pdf

Yes, I have this (and all other "Spinne"-related documents I have been able to locate at TNA. Very expensive copies though, so I'm not posting copies here (The ADM 223/6 is very bad quality anyway - ref attached image). However, I have made a transcript on the AxisHistory-forum (check the link in my previous post).

I have a lot of books on the topic, but as my german is virtually useless, I haven't been able to fully apprehend the content in the german titles, so I'm not sure if more info on the potential submarine-use of TX might have been covered in more depth:

I can't recall Blocksdorf mentioning anything about the testing and use of TX in his book, and I think this book is the most comprehensive account on the K-Verband operations?

I have also attached a german drawing showing the possible types of programsteering being available for the new torpedotypes under development at the end of the war, and a british drawing of the "Lerche" system.

(unreadable ) NAVAL SECTION

TOP SECRET "U"

(unreadable reference)

THE USE FOR COASTAL DEFENCE OF THE REMOTE-CONTROLLED TORPEDO "SPINNE"

1. Introduction
Since 7.6.44 references have appeared to a new type of coastal defence which bears the code-name "SPINNE" (Spider).

2. Description of the weapon
The defence have the form of a remote-controlled torpedo, launched from a beach or mole, to be used by the germans for the protection of ports against the approach of enemy vessels. The torpedo is electrically controlled from the shore by a cable, has a range of 6000 yards, and a speed of 30 knots. Several torpedoes can be launched simultaneously.

3. Administration
Torpedoinspectorate KIEL appears to be the chief authority concerned with "SPINNE", the torpedo trials department being responsible for arranging trials trough the local torpedo commands. Reference has also been made to "SPINNE" Torpedo Kommando ROTTERDAM.

Local torpedo commands at CHERBOURG, BREST, LORIENT, ST.NAZAIRE, LA PALLICE, BORDEUX and TOULON have all been concerned with the construction of "SPINNE" installation.

Request for supplies are made through Gruppe East O Qu, and materials are being supplied by Torpedo Arsenal West, PARIS and Torpedo Arsenal TOULON.

4. Location of "SPINNE" installations
"SPINNE" batteries are being constructed on the Atlantic and Mediterrenean coasts of FRANCE. The chief ports are affected. Already exisiting defences such as cable-barrages etc, are being replaced by "SPINNE" but will remain as additional defences.

i. Installations for "SPINNE" have already been constructed at LA PALICE, MARSEILLES and TOULON.

At LA PALLICE, mole apparatus trials were scheduled for after 29.6, but on 15.6 Torpedo Command LA PALLICE reported that the lowering device for the mole battery could not be completed before the end of june.

At MARSEILLES (landpoint) trolley trials were to take place on 25.6.

The final trials of "SPINNE" were to be held at TOULON after 23.6. Six torpedoes were to be used for the trials and afterwards made available for operations.

ii. Installations for "SPINNE" are also under construction at the following places:

a. BREST:
Constructional work for "SPINNE" is probably being carried out in the BREST area. Torpedo Command BREST was asked by Gruppe West O Qu on 13.6 to state its ground cable requirements for the torpedo.

b. LORIENT:
There is construction work for the new defence proceeding in the LORIENT area. Journeys to DOUARNENEE (? ...it's hard to read this word) and AUDIERNE from LORIENT were considered necessary in connection with "SPINNE" and Torpedo Command LORIENT was asked on 13.6. for its ground cable requirements for "SPINNE".

c. ST. NAZAIRE:
A site at FORT DE LEVE has been proposed but there has been no evidence of work having commenced.

d. POINTE DE GRAVE (opposite ROYAN, at the north of the GIRONDE):
This position would not be ready until the end of of July, owing to the construction of a "floating ram".

e. AGDE:
The construction of this position was reported delayed on 30.6 owing to the lack of fuel and oil for TODT*. A gap for "SPINNE" was left when a minefield was laid out off AGDE on 12.7. The minefield, which consists of three rows, was laid from 4317.2N, 0331.9E to 4316.3N, 0331.1E.

f. SETE:
Construction of the SETE position has also been delayed by the lack of fuel for TODT*. There is a control post, possibly belonging to "SPINNE" on the inner mole.

g. "SPINNE" installations in the area of S.D.C. LANGUEDOC, referred to as 17A, 15B, 12A, 14B and 13A were reported under construction on 13.7. At 17A the shelter was completed. The area of S.D.C. LANGUEDOC includes AGDE, SETE and MARSEILLES.

*Organisation TODT.

5. Personell
Personell who have been mentioned in connection with "SPINNE" are:
Capt von SCHEMERMARK of Gruppe West.
Sublt. (Torp.) KREFELD who was at one of the "SPINNE" installations in the LORIENT area.

Organisation TODT and Pioneer Group are carrying out constructional work for "SPINNE".

There are also several comprehensive documents concerning TVA found at the UK National Archives ("FO series" - I don't recall the exact references now. I have several dealing with the post-war demolitions).

I have collected as much info I have on german WW2 torpedoes from available books/documents here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_torpedoes_of_Germany

The following torpedoes were specifically developed for use on midget submarines:
G7e (TIIIb)
G7e (TIIIc)
G7e (TIIIe) "Kreuzotter"
G7ut (TXIII) "K-Butt"
G7a (TXIV)

There were no ingolin driven (ie hydrogen-peroxide oxygen-carrier) torpedoes ever fielded for operational use as far as I know, even though some types - like the TXIII - were given KM-designation and in production by the end of the war (actually, more TXIII's were manufactured compared to TXI's, wich was actually put aboard submarines just before the capitulation).

Please find attached some clips of archive-documents regarding the TXIII "K-Butt" torpedo:
