Hello Thomas,

The Vichy convoy attacked by HMS P.35 (later known as Umbra) on 20.01.1942 was made up of:

St. Albert (ex Norwegian Betta, 1570 GRT, 1935), Ste. Odette (ex Norwegian Gran, 4140 GRT, 1938), St. Fernand (ex British Temple Pier, 4312 GRT, 1928), Château Latour (1912 GRT, 1914), Sainte Marthe (ex Norwegian Ringulv, 5153 GRT, 1903) escorted by the auxiliary minesweeper Goéland [more precisely I believe this was Goéland X AD167], the torpedo boat Bombarde and sloop La Batailleuse.
I have no indication which ship was the specific target.

Thanks a lot for this information, Platon.
Do you know ports of departure and arrival of the suggested convoy?
Best regards,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

The convoy was going to Sfax but, so far, I have no information as to its departure origin. I have informed Brian Corijn and the Umbra's uboat.net page should be updated soon.

All the best,

Platon

I found mention of several convoys running from Sfax to Bizerta, so very probably the attacked convoy was underway from Bizerta to Sfax.

I also think that Bizerta is a good possibility but so far no confirmation. There is also some doubt if St. Albert was ex Norwegian or ex Danish Betta. I would be interested in your views. Many thanks.

"Saint Albert" was the former Danish "Betta" (Lauritzen).
