MTB 298
« am: 29 August 2016, 09:37:05 »
I wonder which Marinefährprahm was sunk by MTB 298 in the action described here :

Operation Avalanche - Landing at Salerno.
8-9/9/43   MTBs 289 and 298 are despatched to land agents on the mainland in the Gulf of Gaeta. En route they encounter a convoy of Flak lighters, siebel ferries and R boats. MTB 298 fires two torpedoes and hits a large Flak lighter which is destroyed when her cargo of ammunition explodes.

Vielen Dank Thorsten. If the MFP in question was indeed F 345 (and this does seem to be the case, for one thing the date of its loss is spot on) there are some strange discrepancies between the British and German records. The German records do not mention the British MTB 298 at all and there is also no reference to a massive explosion of ammo. I noticed in your link that F 345 has been discussed before :

From the descriptions it seems much more possible that F 345 was sunk by the british MTBs than by the US-PT-boats (because the latter's victim beached itself and F 345 sank).

...The German records do not mention the British MTB 298 at all...
Why not? The german source says that the F-lighters were attacked by "S-Boote", the german term for small fast boats carrying torpedoes as the main weapon.
Of course they were not aware of the number/name of the boat.
And further the german war diary says (Darius did not mention this) that there was speculation about the nationality of the enemy. Italian MAS-boats were more or less excluded because of their range and british forces were thougt possible.
